This approach has gained popularity since Covey\u2019s death, with research increasingly focusing on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/viewdoc\/download?doi=10.1.1.968.3853&amp;rep=rep1&amp;type=pdf\">self-leadership<\/a>\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/worthyleadership.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/search-for-worthy-leadership.pdf\">worthy leadership<\/a>.\u201d The Worthy Leadership model, for example, has three main facets: capacity, commitment, and character.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this effectively, leaders also need to develop these qualities in themselves. Covey maps the four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/different-kinds-of-intelligence\/\">types of intelligence<\/a> onto<strong> <\/strong>what are known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-are-the-functions-of-a-leader\/\">roles of a leader<\/a>. Each role <strong>should be able to step into as needed: the Auditor, the Navigator, the Advocate, and the Captain<\/strong>. In the Auditor role, leaders ask: Do our current systems line up with our mission and strategic priorities? If not, what needs to be done to bring them in line?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Higher education expert Laura Montgomery adds that reconciling strategy and reality <a href=\"https:\/\/execed.economist.com\/career-advice\/career-hacks\/turning-your-strategy-reality-three-challenges-overcome\">involves three key capabilities<\/a>: clear communication from senior executives, openness and trust between departments, and agile responses to changes in the external environment.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leadership Role 2:<\/strong> The Navigator<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Navigator role, which Covey calls \u201cpathfinding,\u201d<strong> <\/strong>relates to the <em>mind <\/em>of the organization and involves implementing <em>focus <\/em>on an organizational scale. <strong>In the Navigator role, leaders consult others about the future of the organization and plot a course forward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The skills of Navigating include listening, distilling common values and strategic policies, and using conflict as a springboard to create new, synergistic solutions. This notion supports Covey\u2019s observation that the most difficult role of a leader is the Navigator role.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leadership Role 3:<\/strong> The Advocate<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Advocate role, which Covey calls \u201cempowering,\u201d<strong> <\/strong>relates to the <em>heart <\/em>of the organization and involves implementing <em>dedication <\/em>on an organizational scale. <strong>Advocates encourage independence in members of the organization<\/strong>: They communicate the desired results and then trust people to develop the methods that work best to get them there.
