In his book, Zappos is said to be built on employees&#8217; and customers&#8217; happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more about the most important principles taught in Tony Hsieh&#8217;s Zappos book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-having-a-company-culture\">Having a Company Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the book, Zappos is considered to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/building-a-positive-workplace-culture\/\">healthy company culture<\/a>, which is one of the most important elements of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-makes-a-business-successful\/\">successful business<\/a>. While he never provides a concrete definition of company culture, we\u2019ve used his discussions on culture to define it as follows: <strong>Culture is the standard behaviors and beliefs that the employees of a company maintain both in business settings and in their personal lives.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s important to have a culture that reflects your business\u2019s mission<\/strong> so that your employees will habitually behave appropriately to advance that mission. For example, Google\u2019s mission is <a href=\"https:\/\/alessiobresciani.com\/foresight-strategy\/51-mission-statement-examples-from-the-worlds-best-companies\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CTo%C2%A0organize%20the%20world%E2%80%99s%20information%20and%20make%20it%20universally%20accessible%20and%20useful.%E2%80%9D\">to make information universally accessible<\/a>. Behaviors and beliefs that fit this mission include encouraging curiosity and valuing transparency. Employees with these traits will approach their jobs with open minds and determination to innovate and improve information accessibility, advancing Google\u2019s mission. However, if Google\u2019s culture didn\u2019t reflect its mission, instead prioritizing profit over customer satisfaction or accessibility, employees might suggest and implement policies counter to the mission (such as putting up paywalls).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zappos sets itself apart from its competitors through a culture devoted to making its employees happy. Hsieh believes that <strong>by making its employees happy, Zappos will naturally fulfill its other objectives of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-great-customer-service\/\">great customer service<\/a> and continued success.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nurturing-culture\">Nurturing Culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Zappos began nurturing its culture early in the company\u2019s life. Shaping the culture at this stage was easy, Hsieh explains in his book, because <strong>Zappos had a small group of employees who joined the company because they were excited about the project,<\/strong> rather than just looking to make money. Zappos could start nurturing these good qualities from the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on these employees\u2019 suggestions, the <em>Delivering Happiness<\/em> book can refine Zappos\u2019s culture into three critical categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A culture of friendship<\/li><li>A culture of support<\/li><li>A culture of innovation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Provide Great Customer Service<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the book, Zappos values <strong>great customer service, meaning employees are so supportive and adaptable in every customer interaction that you have a positive emotional impact on the customer.<\/strong> This positive emotional impact is the first step toward forming a healthy and profitable long-term relationship with that customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hsieh says <strong>providing<\/strong> <strong>good customer service is important because it increases the \u201clifetime value\u201d of customers.<\/strong> This is the total revenue that a customer brings to the company throughout their life. If a customer only uses your service once, then their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/easy-guide-to-ltv-and-cac-startups\/\">lifetime value<\/a> is low. However, if you create an emotional connection through your customer service, your customers are more likely to return to your business and increase their lifetime value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hsieh believes that an important step in encouraging great customer service is making it a company-wide initiative:<\/strong> in other words, making sure that <em>every department knows<\/em> that offering great customer service is part of your company\u2019s brand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-continuing-education\">Continuing Education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final important element of a successful business is continuing employee education: in other words, constantly providing your employees with training and learning opportunities. This training shouldn\u2019t only apply to the skills the employee was hired for, Hsieh adds. Rather, <strong>employees should learn about a variety of different skills and areas of knowledge so they can more easily innovate and adapt to new situations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, <strong>companies are only as good as their employees,<\/strong> Hsieh explains in his book. Zappos couldn&#8217;t grow and improve unless the employees do as well because they\u2019re the ones operating the business. Thus, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/keep-innovating\/\">keep innovating<\/a> and maintain your company\u2019s success, support your employees\u2019 innovation and success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, <strong>continuing education is important for business succession planning.<\/strong> Many companies train their employees for a single, specific job, Hsieh says. Then, when those employees must adapt to another role\u2014whether because of a planned promotion or an emergency\u2014they aren\u2019t prepared to do so. However, if your company prioritizes continuing education in a variety of skills and areas of knowledge, you\u2019ll create a system where any time a role opens, there\u2019s an employee ready to fill it.
