What Is Netflix Gaming?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On November 9th, 2021, Netflix announced<\/a> that their games were available globally on Android and iOS devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of their most popular games at the moment are Asphalt Xtreme, Stranger Things 1984<\/em>, and Card Blast!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public Reception<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So far, reviews for the new addition have been less than raving. Business Insider<\/a> said Netflix games \u201cisn\u2019t as exciting as we\u2019d expected\u201d and Digital Trends<\/a> said, \u201cAt the moment, Netflix provides no reason to draw people away from playing on console, PC, or even other mobile games.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The biggest complaint is that Netflix doesn\u2019t seem to be taking advantage of its franchises. Other than the two Stranger Things <\/em>games (Stranger Things 1984 <\/em>and Stranger Things 3: The Game<\/em>), the rest of the games are similar to the ones you can get for free from the app store, or can play on an airplane tv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Netflix isn\u2019t giving up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next Games Acquisition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Netflix\u2019s recently hired VP of game development, Mike Verdu (who previously worked on Facebook\u2019s Oculus and EA Games), says that his goal is \u201cto build a library of great games for our members to enjoy.\u201d That\u2019s why Netflix just bought Next Games<\/a> on March 1, 2022 for approximately $72 million USD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next Games<\/a> is a mobile game development company based out of Helsinki, Finland. Among other games, they developed the Stranger Things<\/em> games that are already in Netflix\u2019s game library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netflix\u2019s plan is to keep building its library. In their 2022 shareholder letter<\/a>, they said \u201cIn 2022, we\u2019ll expand our portfolio of games across both casual and core gaming genres as we continue to program a breadth of game types to learn what our members enjoy most.\u201d So it seems like more IP games are in the pipeline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, is Netflix\u2019s foray into mobile gaming paying off? It\u2019s off to a slow start, but the Next Games acquisition may be what they need to get their feet off the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
