In life, Carroll argues, <strong>the key to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-overcome-obstacles\/\">overcoming obstacles<\/a> is breaking them down into smaller, more manageable components that empower us to take action<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Carroll says that despite having the power to make choices that can alter our circumstances, we tend to see them as entirely outside of our control and therefore feel powerless. Therefore, although everyone has the power to make choices, the impact of those choices may not be as significant for those who face high levels of inequality.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bullet-journal-solution-the-five-whys-method\"><strong>The Bullet Journal Solution<\/strong>: &#8220;The Five Whys&#8221; Method<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To take your power back and address your challenges head-on, <strong>Carroll recommends that you create a new customized section and use the \u201cFive Whys\u201d method<\/strong>. The founder of Toyota, Sakichi Toyoda, created the method to uncover problems and find solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The method: Choose a problem and ask why it\u2019s occurring five times<\/strong>. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I\u2019m struggling to lose weight \u2192 <em>Why?<\/em><\/li><li>Because I don\u2019t have time to exercise \u2192 <em>Why?<\/em><\/li><li>Because I\u2019m really busy at work \u2192 <em>Why?<\/em><\/li><li>Because I\u2019m working alone on a big project \u2192 <em>Why?<\/em><\/li><li>Because my boss thinks it\u2019s a one-person job \u2192 <em>Why?<\/em><\/li><li>Because I\u2019ve done similar work in the past, even though I got burnt out<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In addition to uncovering the root of a problem, you can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/5-whys-analysis-root-cause-analysis\/\">Five Whys<\/a> method <a href=\"https:\/\/www.startofhappiness.com\/the-5-whys-template-and-how-you-can-create-sustained-motivation-free-download\/\">to help you discover your underlying motivation<\/a>. Instead of asking \u201cwhy?\u201d to solve a problem, you can instead ask \u201cwhy do I want this?\u201d to find the purpose of a goal.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll says that by asking these questions, you can see beyond the superficial to everything that\u2019s involved in the problem. What\u2019s more, <strong>once you\u2019ve broken the problem down into parts, you can start to find solutions targeting each component<\/strong>. For instance, if you don\u2019t have time to exercise, you could wake up earlier, meal prep on the weekends, bike to work, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Although Carroll suggests the Five Whys for uncovering the root causes of a problem, he doesn&#8217;t mention the Five Hows, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/asq.org\/quality-resources\/five-whys\">an accompanying technique used to develop a <em>solution<\/em> to that problem<\/a>. Just as with the Five Whys, you can begin with an initial solution and ask yourself \u201chow?\u201d to brainstorm the details of that solution.
