In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/tiny-habits\"><em>Tiny Habits<\/em><\/a>, BJ Fogg argues that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/tiny-habits\/introduction#the-information-action-fallacy\">change is more successful when we\u2019re feeling positive<\/a>, and positivity is more easily cultivated when we experience the small successes that come from gradual change.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/benefits-of-focus\/\">benefits of focusing<\/a> on continual change, Carroll argues, <strong>we often make the mistake of trying to enact big, immediate changes<\/strong>. While it\u2019s understandable to want to improve, great accomplishments require great effort, and such enormous undertakings can cause us to feel overwhelmed and even paralyzed by fear. What\u2019s more, he adds, when we can\u2019t make the changes we were hoping for, we tend to see it as a personal failure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Although Carroll observes that we often try to make sweeping changes, he doesn\u2019t explore <em>why<\/em> this might be the case. Experts say that the reason we attempt to enact big, immediate changes is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-truth-about-exercise-addiction\/201608\/why-is-change-so-hard\">we psychologically view change as a straightforward progression<\/a>. In reality, however, change isn\u2019t linear. Instead, we progress through a series of stages in a back-and-forth fashion, repeating certain steps again and again until change successfully occurs.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bullet-journal-solution\"><strong>The Bullet Journal Solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-shift-your-mindset\/\">shift your mindset<\/a> to continual improvement, Carroll recommends that you <strong>break down large goals into smaller, self-contained projects by creating a Bullet Journal tracking system.<\/strong> Doing so can help you see your progress and therefore motivate you to keep moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Motivation isn\u2019t the only benefit that comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/track-your-progress-2\/\">tracking your progress<\/a>. According to the American Psychological Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2015\/10\/progress-goals\">frequently monitoring progress toward your goals directly increases your chances of success<\/a>. What\u2019s more, those chances increase even more if you record your progress or report it publicly.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For each of your goals, Carroll recommends <strong>creating a separate customized section in which you can break it down into different projects<\/strong>\u2014whatever makes sense for the particular goal. For example, if your overarching goal is to learn to speak Portuguese, you could break it down into a series of smaller projects beginning with memorizing the most-used words in the language.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To determine the appropriate tasks for each self-contained project<\/strong>, Carroll advises that you <strong>ask yourself simple questions<\/strong> like \u201cWhat small step can I take to move forward right now?\u201d The easier the step is, the more likely you are to follow through. To continue the example, you could break down the project of memorizing the most-used words in Portuguese into smaller tasks like learning verbs, nouns, adjectives, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Carroll\u2019s recommendation to break projects down into actionable steps is especially helpful when you\u2019re not sure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-achieve\/\">how to achieve<\/a> a goal. For example, if your goal is to organize your garage, you could commit to spending 30 minutes per day decluttering until it\u2019s finished.
