Although you may not be conscious of them, you have powerful beliefs that affect what you want and whether you get it. In <em>Mindset<\/em>, psychologist and researcher Carol S. Dweck argues that <strong>your attitudes about how fixed your abilities and intelligence are can determine the course of much of your life, starting as early as your preschool years.&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You learn one of two mindsets from your parents, teachers, and coaches: <strong>that<\/strong> <strong>personal qualities such as intelligence are innate and unchangeable (a \u201cfixed\u201d mindset) or that you and others can change and grow (a \u201cgrowth\u201d mindset)<\/strong>. This view shapes your personality and helps or hinders you from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/reach-your-potential\/\">reaching your potential<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mindset shapes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/different-types-of-learning-styles\/\">how you learn<\/a>, cope with setbacks, advance in your career, and relate to others. So, what is your mindset? Here\u2019s how the two mindsets compare.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fixed mindset<\/strong>: When you have a fixed mindset, you believe your abilities are unchangeable. You were born with certain traits and a certain amount of intelligence and that\u2019s that. Many people are trained in this mindset from an early age \u2014 for instance, by a teacher who believes your IQ determines everything: You\u2019re either smart or you\u2019re dumb; you can learn or you can\u2019t. <strong>When you view your abilities as unchangeable, you feel you must constantly prove yourself<\/strong>. If people get a set amount of intelligence, you want to prove you have a lot, although you secretly worry you were shortchanged.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Growth mindset<\/strong>: When you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/growth-mindset-development\/\">have a growth mindset<\/a>, you believe the abilities you\u2019re born with are a starting point. You can get smarter and grow with hard work, persistence, and the right <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/learning-strategies-for-students\/\">learning strategies<\/a>. You have a passion for learning, welcome mistakes as opportunities to learn, and seek challenges so you can stretch.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two different mindsets lead to different sets of thoughts and actions, and two different paths. They dictate people\u2019s aspirations; how they see success, failure, and effort; and what that means in school, sports, work, and relationships. In answering, What is your mindset? think about your typical behaviors. Here are some ways the mindsets shape your life.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Success and Failure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the fixed mindset world, success is about proving to yourself and others that you\u2019re smart and talented<\/strong>. If you fail, it means you\u2019re not smart or talented, therefore failure is intolerable. Failure is any type of setback: a bad grade, losing a competition, not getting the job or promotion you want, being rejected. Effort is a negative \u2014 if you need it, that means you\u2019re not smart.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-growth-mindset\/\">the growth mindset<\/a> world where you can change, success is about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/stretch-yourself\/\">stretching yourself<\/a><\/strong>, learning, and improving. Failure is not seizing an opportunity to learn, not striving for what\u2019s important to you, not reaching for your potential. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/value-of-hard-work\/\">Effort is a positive<\/a> \u2014 it helps you get smarter and increase your abilities. For growth-minded people, it wasn\u2019t about perfection. They said they felt smart when they tried hard and made progress or were able to do something they couldn\u2019t do before. <strong>Feeling smart was about learning.<\/strong> What is your mindset? When do you feel smartest?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fixed Mindsets and Entitlement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A fixed-mindset person\u2019s need to believe they\u2019re smart can evolve into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/false-sense-of-entitlement\/\">sense of entitlement<\/a><\/strong> or specialness. Not only are they smart, they\u2019re smarter or more talented than anyone else. Their need for validation is constant. The self-esteem movement bolsters this belief, for instance by encouraging you to remember your specialness with daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/affirmation-and-visualization-7-habits\/\">affirmations<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tennis player John McEnroe is an example of both an entitled attitude and the pitfalls of a fixed mindset. He believed only in talent. Because he didn\u2019t learn, he didn\u2019t improve or grow as a player.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, basketball player Michael Jordan was growth-minded. He found public admiration embarrassing because he didn\u2019t consider himself to be better than others \u2014 <strong>he\u2019d developed his skills by working at them and always had room to improve<\/strong>.
