What exactly does pacifism mean? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in his book <em>The Cost of Discipleship<\/em>, argues that Christians should practice pacifism to follow Christ&#8217;s example. Other Christians\u2014and other religions\u2014handle the matter of pacifism in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about Christian pacifism and other perspectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dietrich-bonhoeffer-christian-pacifism\">Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Christian Pacifism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonhoeffer asserts that disciples of Christ should practice strict pacifism. After all, as his disciples, we should model our behavior after his example: Christ loved us enough to die for us, even when we were hostile toward him. Thus, we should love others and treat them with kindness, even when they treat us with hostility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonhoeffer affirms that we can love people unreservedly without condoning their sin. In fact, he says that non-resistance is the <em>only<\/em> response that truly condemns sin, because sin reproduces through retaliation: If someone hurts you, and you respond by hurting them, it will likely provoke them to hurt you again, and so on. However, if you let someone hurt you and forgive them instead of retaliating, then the sin they committed against you dies instead of multiplying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Contrasting Views on Pacifism<\/strong><br><br>Perspectives on pacifism vary widely, both among Christians and people of other religious persuasions:<br><br>Groups such the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quakersaustralia.org.au\/node\/19\">Quakers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mennoniteusa.org\/who-are-mennonites\/what-we-believe\/confession-of-faith\/peace-justice-and-nonresistance\/\">Mennonites<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/amishamerica.com\/why-dont-amish-serve-in-the-military\/\">Amish<\/a> promote Christian pacifism in much the same way as Bonhoeffer does.<br><br>Contrastingly, the <strong>Catholic<\/strong> church and many <strong>Protestant <\/strong>churches endorse the view of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/st-augustine-biography\/\">St. Augustine<\/a>, who, in the 5th century, argued that use of force in war, self-defense, or law enforcement was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Just_war_theory\">justifiable and even obligatory<\/a> in certain cases. Specifically, Augustine asserted that it is a sin for you to allow a grievous act of evil to be perpetrated, if you have the opportunity to prevent it. This contrasts sharply with Bonhoeffer\u2019s teaching that evil can only <em>multiply<\/em> through retaliation. In Augustine\u2019s view, there are situations where resistance or retaliation allows evil to multiply by escalating a conflict, but there are also situations where <em>non-resistance<\/em> allows evil to grow and multiply.<br><br>In <strong>Islam<\/strong>, use of force in self-defense and military defense of the Muslim community are generally considered not only permissible but mandatory. This is based on the concept of \u201cjihad,\u201d which refers to a Muslim\u2019s duty to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamic_military_jurisprudence\">strive against evil,<\/a> both on an internal, spiritual level, and also externally against people who perpetrate acts of evil. This resembles Augustine\u2019s view and contradicts Bonhoeffer&#8217;s.<br><br>In <strong>Buddhism<\/strong>, pacifism is widely endorsed, because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/buddha-journey\/\">Buddha<\/a> is said to have taught that all creatures share the same life force, and so violence against another creature (human or animal) was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buddhism_and_violence\">never justifiable<\/a>. However, some Buddhists take exception to this teaching. For example, Buddhist monks of the Shaolin monastery <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shaolin_Kung_Fu\">practice martial arts<\/a> and use force for self-defense or defense of others.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Should Christians practice pacifism?
