Why is maintaining individuality important for a relationship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his book <em>The Art of Loving, <\/em>Erich Fromm outlines the requirements for genuine love. The four requirements are nourishment, responsiveness, acceptance, and understanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue below for a full explanation of each requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-genuine-love\">What Is <strong>Genuine Love<\/strong>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Fromm\u2019s view, the healthiest way to overcome the anxiety of separation and connect to others is through genuine love. <strong>Genuine love happens when two people join together <\/strong><strong><em>while still maintaining their individual identities<\/em><\/strong>. They do not become enmeshed\u2014instead, each is a whole person unto themselves, so they can give love to each other wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: This definition of genuine love is similar to Simone de Beauvoir\u2019s definition of \u201cauthentic love.\u201d Like Fromm, she argues that for love to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/be-sincere\/\">be authentic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/318770923_Love_-_According_to_Simone_de_Beauvoir\">both partners must recognize each other as unique individuals<\/a> while still respecting each other as complete equals. Beauvoir first laid out this definition in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Second_Sex#Translations\"><em>The Second Sex<\/em><\/a>, which was translated into English in 1953, so it\u2019s possible that Fromm was influenced by her ideas.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this section, we\u2019ll explore genuine love in more detail, including the requirements and types of genuine love and how to develop genuine love in your own life. Then, we\u2019ll see how genuine love differs from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-false-love\/\">false love<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-requirements-of-genuine-love\"><strong>4 Requirements of Genuine Love<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Fromm, there are four requirements for genuine love: nourishment, responsiveness, acceptance, and understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nourishment\">Nourishment<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In Fromm\u2019s view, the first requirement of genuine love is nourishment. In this case, nourishment means actively contributing to the survival and wellbeing of another person\u2014for example, by providing them with food and shelter. (Shortform note: Fromm isn\u2019t the only psychologist to recognize the foundational importance of nourishment: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplypsychology.org\/maslow.html\">Abraham Maslow also acknowledged it in his hierarchy of needs<\/a>. Physical nourishment needs such as food and shelter form the foundation of his hierarchy\u2014we need to meet those needs before we can consider any other, just like we need to give love in the form of nourishment before we can give other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/5-types-of-love\/\">types of love<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-responsiveness\">Responsiveness<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The second requirement of genuine love is responsiveness. According to Fromm, a responsive person notices and reacts to the needs of others, whether material or emotional, rather than ignoring or abandoning them. (Shortform note: While Fromm argues that responsiveness is important in all kinds of genuine love, others point out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/psychology\/sensitive-responsiveness#:~:text=Attachment%20in%20Adulthood&amp;text=Parental%20sensitive%20responsiveness%20has%20been,promptly%20and%20adequately%20%5B5%5D.\">it\u2019s particularly important in parent-child relationships<\/a>. Noticing and responding to a child\u2019s needs forms the basis of a secure attachment, in which the child feels completely safe and loved by their parents.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-acceptance\">Acceptance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The third requirement of genuine love is acceptance. In Fromm\u2019s view, acceptance means to love someone <em>as they are<\/em>, without trying to change them. When you accept someone, you support and nourish their growth because they deserve the freedom to grow, not because that growth would bring them closer to who <em>you <\/em>want them to be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: There is a difference between loving someone as they are and letting them walk all over you. If you\u2019re unhappy with something about your loved one, experts agree with Fromm that <a href=\"https:\/\/positivepsychology.com\/great-self-care-setting-healthy-boundaries\/\">you shouldn\u2019t try to change them, but you <em>should <\/em>set boundaries to protect yourself<\/a>. For example, if your partner never cleans up after himself in the kitchen, you can\u2019t force him to be neater\u2014but you can tell him that you won\u2019t be giving up your personal time to clean up after him.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding\">Understanding<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The fourth and final requirement of genuine love is understanding. In this case, understanding means being able to read someone\u2019s subtle emotional cues and understand why they feel what they feel. When you genuinely love someone, you understand who they truly are at their core.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Fromm argues that understanding your loved one is crucial, but he doesn\u2019t describe how to develop this understanding.
