What are the most common myths about sexuality? How does buying into these myths affect our sexual experience? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are a lot of misconceptions about sex<\/a> that even experienced adults still believe and perpetuate. In her book Come as You Are<\/em>, sex researcher Emily Nagoski points out a few harmful but common misconceptions about sexuality perpetuated by society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s debunk the two most entrenched myths that are still prevalent in our understanding of sexuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Myth 1: Men Get \u201cHard\u201d and Women Get \u201cWet\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most common myths about sexuality our culture perpetuates is that men and women get aroused differently: an aroused man gets \u201chard\u201d and an aroused woman gets \u201cwet\u201d. She says the truth, however,<\/strong> is that men and women do both<\/strong>. A man\u2019s penis and a woman\u2019s clitoris both become engorged when blood rushes to the area. Similarly, men and women both release fluid as they become aroused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Shortform note: Although Nagoski clarifies that both men and women get \u201chard\u201d and \u201cwet,\u201d she doesn\u2019t explain why<\/em> this is the case. In the first instance, the swelling of blood in the penis and clitoris that creates erections also increases sensitivity<\/a> for the purpose of pleasure. In the second instance, the fluids that men and women release during the process of arousal eliminate acidity, which helps to create the proper environment for sperm to survive<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth 2: Ejaculation Is Masculine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nagoski adds that many also believe that because it\u2019s uncommon for women to release fluid during orgasm, ejaculation is only for men. This idea creates one of two problematic and conflicting assumptions: 1) female ejaculation is unacceptable and abnormal, or 2) because it\u2019s uncommon, it\u2019s a prize to idealize. <\/strong>In reality, Nagoski reassures readers that whether a woman ejaculates or not, it\u2019s entirely acceptable and healthy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Shortform note: One additional reason for the prevalence of this misconception that Nagoski doesn\u2019t mention is the lack of research on female ejaculation. Because there have been few studies on the subject, scientists still don\u2019t fully understand how female ejaculation happens, what its purpose is, or even how many women experience it.
