HarperCollins e-books published a revised Kindle edition in 2009.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-historical-context\"><strong>Historical Context<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The expansion of choice in market democracies is an effect of <a href=\"https:\/\/thereader.mitpress.mit.edu\/a-brief-history-of-consumer-culture\/\">the rise of consumerist capitalism<\/a>, particularly in the United States. During the 20th century, the industrialized economy grew in fits and starts, hampered by significant national and global events (particularly World War I, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/great-depression-and-the-new-deal\/\">Great Depression<\/a>, and World War II). However, following World War II, the organizations driving the economy placed their bets on the idea of consumerism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, the United States\u2019 economy had grown large but needed to inspire consumer demand for the products it was generating at an accelerating rate. Companies used advertising and marketing to spark new needs and wants, thereby increasing consumer demand to match supply. Commodities came to be seen as status symbols: The middle class could now purchase \u201cluxury\u201d products, and these new goods communicated that their social station was on the rise. The United States\u2019 economy, and those of comparable market democracies, continues to rely on consumerism. However, one result of a consumerist culture is that choices consistently expand. Since the economy relies on people constantly finding new things they want to buy, companies are incentivized to regularly create new options. As Schwartz argues, the expansion of choice now overwhelms our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/methods-of-decision-making-crucial-conversations\/\">decision-making<\/a> abilities and creates stress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-intellectual-context\"><strong>Intellectual Context<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Much of <em>The Paradox of Choice <\/em>incorporates concepts from psychologists, economists, and social scientists. The ideas of psychologists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/daniel-kahneman-and-amos-tversky\/\">Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky<\/a> are particularly prominent throughout the book.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kahneman is a Nobel Prize-winning economist and psychologist, whose work on decision-making and judgment significantly influenced Schwartz. For instance, writers in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2013\/08\/more-is-more-why-the-paradox-of-choice-might-be-a-myth\/278658\/\"><em>The Atlantic<\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9cebd444-cd9c-11de-8162-00144feabdc0#axzz2rEYLWhAO\"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a> questioned the premise of Schwartz\u2019s book several years after its publication, when the problem of too much choice had become a mainstream idea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to these critics, Schwartz\u2019s thesis was unscientific and not grounded in sufficient evidence; they argued that some of the key studies Schwartz used to shape his ideas were not consistently replicated. One primary argument against the paradox of choice is that, rather than being overwhelmed by numerous options, we\u2019re unwilling to choose when we only have one option.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/economy\/is-the-famous-paradox-of-choic\">Schwartz responded to critics in detail.<\/a> He acknowledged that his argument was not universal, and that there are instances when more choice can be beneficial.
