If you like what you read here, there\u2019s plenty more to check out in the guide!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-create-meaningful-milestones-for-your-organization\"><strong>Create Meaningful Milestones for Your Organization<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, organizations tend to get lost in their big-picture goals\u2014achievements that matter to the organization, but perhaps not to the people who need to take the steps to make those achievements happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For instance, \u201cLet\u2019s increase our school\u2019s 4th grade state test scores by 2% this year.\u201d Or, \u201cWe want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/increase-revenue\/\">increase revenue<\/a> by $3 million this quarter.\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While these may be worthy and important goals, they don\u2019t really matter on a more personal level, which can easily make team members feel lost or demotivated. They\u2019re just one person among many. What could they possibly do, personally, that would help make that goal happen?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Heaths say that you should view a disconnect between the motivations of your team and the motivations of your organization as an opportunity to build in small wins that are motivating on your team\u2019s level. To achieve this, you need to ask yourself three questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>What inherently motivates my team? <\/strong>In a setting with clients, this might look like: Receive a 5-star review from a satisfied customer.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What deserves celebration and doesn\u2019t take too long to accomplish (a few days, weeks, months)? <\/strong>In an ad sales setting, you could set a goal such as: Secure one luxury goods brand and one luxury travel brand for the December issue.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>What are uncelebrated milestones we can bring attention to and celebrate? <\/strong>In a customer service setting, this may look like: Go one week without any customers scoring below 5 on the satisfaction survey.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Psychologists back up the power of breaking down large, ambiguous issues\u2014studies show that <a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/1984-25682-001\">reframing major social issues as a series of small, solvable problems strengthens individuals&#8217; motivations to take action<\/a>. When an issue feels like an overwhelming beast, no one feels up to the task of tackling it. When it feels like a series of small puzzles, however, people feel more confident in their problem-solving abilities.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-making-a-vague-goal-personal-and-meaningful\">Making a Vague Goal Personal and Meaningful<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an example of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/team-motivation-ideas\/\">how to motivate your team<\/a> by breaking down big, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/ambitious-goals\/\">ambitious goals<\/a> into goals that matter on a personal level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a school presents a goal for the academic year: Increase our school\u2019s 4th grade state test scores by 2% this year.<em> <\/em>Ms. Smith, a 4th grade teacher, breaks this big goal down into smaller goals her students can accomplish:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Level 1:<\/strong> Earn a spot in \u201cMs. Smith\u2019s Homework Stars of the Week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Level 2:<\/strong> Read for an extra 30 minutes every night and write down two new vocabulary words each week, earn a lollipop at Friday lunch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Level 3:<\/strong> Earn 100% on your morning multiplication drill and be the line leader for recess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Level 4: <\/strong>Write a story using five new reading vocabulary words to earn three extra points on your next vocabulary test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Level 5:<\/strong> Earn above 90% on two math quizzes to earn a No Homework Pass for one night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Destination:<\/strong> Students who are working harder in math and reading, subsequently making the necessary improvements to perform well in state testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach works for her students\u2014they can understand the smaller goals and easily achieve them with a bit of effort. Furthermore, the goals are fun enough to matter to 10-year-olds, and her students have many occasions to feel pride on their journey to math and reading improvement.
