He says that when you make a mistake, take full responsibility for it and relish the chance to get better, rather than being ashamed about it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is why you should reflect and savor the pain, instead of avoiding it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pain-reflection-progress\">Pain + Reflection = Progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dalio uses the equation of Pain + Reflection = Progress to show how you can use your mistakes to get a better outcome in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dalio notes that plenty of people at Bridgewater make very costly mistakes. A common corporate reaction is to fire these people, but Dalio thinks this just encourages people to hide their mistakes. Instead, he says that reflecting on mistakes as a team and striving to do better is the best way forward, so Bridgewater has an \u201cissue log\u201d where employees must add each of their mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Different Formula, Similar Principle<\/strong><br><br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-success-principles\"><em>The Success Principles<\/em><\/a>, author Jack Canfield offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-success-principles\/principles-1-30\">a similar formula for improving outcomes<\/a>: <strong>Event + Response = Outcome<\/strong>:<br><br><strong>Event: <\/strong>something that happens in your life.<br><br><strong>Response: <\/strong>how you choose to respond to the event.<br><br><strong>Outcome: <\/strong>the <em>result<\/em> of how you choose to respond to the event.<br><br>According to Canfield, there are two possible responses. You can either <strong>blame the event for your outcome<\/strong>, or you can <strong>adjust your response until you get your desired outcome<\/strong>. The latter is the best course of action because it means you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/accepting-responsibility\/\">take responsibility<\/a> for the quality of your life and believe that it\u2019s within your power to improve it. Both formulas\u2014Dalio\u2019s and Canfield\u2019s\u2014require you to accept <em>your<\/em> role in your situation instead of blaming outside forces.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-exercise-reflect-on-your-mistakes\"><strong>Exercise: Reflect On Your Mistakes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Endure the pain of reflecting on your mistakes to improve for the future.
