His compelling rags-to-riches story shows just how much you can accomplish when you have a strategy for going after what you want. In his book goals <em>Goals!<\/em>, Tracy explains how to figure out what you want in life and set goals to achieve it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step to setting goals is to determine what you actually want in life. This is important because knowing what you want keeps you from wandering aimlessly\u2014when you know where you\u2019re going, you can move forward purposefully and decisively. (Shortform note: While you shouldn\u2019t formulate goals based on what <em>others<\/em> want, instead focusing on what <em>you <\/em>want as Tracy suggests, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2020\/05\/200526173834.htm\">copying other people\u2019s <em>strategies<\/em> to achieve goals is effective<\/a>. Research suggests that emulating other people\u2019s successful tactics to reach similar goals can increase your confidence.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use this step to figure out what you want and set the direction for every area of your life: finances, career, relationships, and health. To avoid coming up with vague wishes, <strong>make sure that your goals are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-clear-and-quantifiable\"><strong>1) Clear and Quantifiable&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tracy argues that having clear and quantifiable goals allows you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/track-your-progress-2\/\">measure your progress<\/a>. Research suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/11\/when-you-give-your-team-a-goal-make-it-a-range\">range goals have the added advantage<\/a> of striking a good balance between being challenging and being attainable.) <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-time-constrained\"><strong>3) Time Constrained&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Deadlines give you a sense of urgency and prompt you to act. Tracy says it\u2019s okay if you don\u2019t meet them\u2014they aren\u2019t set in stone, and you can just keep setting new deadlines until you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/steps-to-achieve-your-goals\/\">reach your goals<\/a>. What matters is that you have a target to aim for. (Shortform note: Some argue that setting deadlines for your goals can be limiting and disheartening, so they recommend<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/live-your-life-on-purpose\/do-you-need-to-give-your-goals-deadlines-to-be-successful-909122c7c931\"> paying attention to the <em>process <\/em>to reach your goals<\/a>.
