If you like what you read here, there\u2019s plenty more to check out in the guide!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-kind-of-investor-should-you-be\">What Kind of Investor Should You Be? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on whether you\u2019re aiming for financial security, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/maturity-continuum-7-habits\/\">independence<\/a>, or freedom, Kiyosaki has different investing advice for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. The Client <\/strong>is someone who pays a professional to invest their money. You put up the money, but you don\u2019t make the decisions. While Kiyosaki encourages you to try to invest on your own, he says if you don\u2019t have the will or the talent to do so, this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/choose-your-own-path\/\">your path<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure the person you\u2019re paying makes most of their money investing, not off fees. Why would you trust someone to invest your money when they don\u2019t even invest their own?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Sethi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/i-will-teach-you-to-be-rich\/chapter-6\">agrees that unless you have a very complicated financial situation, hiring a financial advisor will cause you to lose money in fees while getting the same results you could learn to earn on your own<\/a>. Sethi notes that mutual fund managers only \u201cbeat the market\u201d 25% of the time. In addition to finding a no-fee financial advisor, Sethi says to make sure your advisor is a fiduciary\u2014someone who is legally obligated to put your financial interests first.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. The DIY Investor. <\/strong>You do your own research and make your own decisions about where to invest<em> your own money. <\/em>That is the key feature of the DIY investor and the key difference between this and the next level, the Capitalist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DIY investors buy and sell their own stocks. In real estate, they buy, sell, and manage their own properties.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To begin investing in the stock market, call stockbrokers and ask for their guidance, then open a small trading account.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. The Capitalist.<\/strong> By Kiyosaki\u2019s definition, capitalists straddle two categories: They\u2019re both big-business owners <em>and <\/em>investors. Whereas the DIY investor invests her own money, capitalists invest <em>other people\u2019s money<\/em>. (Because they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-makes-a-business-successful\/\">successful business<\/a> people, banks and investors are more willing to loan them larger sums of money, which the capitalist invests.) You need to have the highest level of financial literacy to reach this level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: You don\u2019t need to be a capitalist to invest with other people\u2019s money. You can get a personal loan to use to invest, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/how-to-improve-your-credit-score-4590097\">you\u2019ll need to show you\u2019re credible with a good credit score<\/a> to get a good interest rate. You can improve your credit score by paying at least the minimum on your credit cards each month, working toward paying off your debt, and opening and closing new cards judiciously.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is Robert Kiyosaki&#8217;s advice for succeeding as an investor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-invest-in-what-you-know\"><strong>1. Invest in What You Know <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kiyosaki says that wealthy people don\u2019t diversify their assets, and you shouldn\u2019t either. He says it\u2019s better to choose one, or just a few, investment categories so you can become deeply knowledgeable about them and make smarter investments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/i-will-teach-you-to-be-rich\/1-page-summary\"><em>I Will Teach You To Be Rich<\/em><\/a>, Sethi strongly advocates diversifying your investments across both asset classes, like stocks and bonds, and the type of asset within each class. For example, he recommends investing in stocks of both small and large companies and a mix of short and long-term bonds from different issuers. He says diversifying your investments allows you to balance riskier investments with safer investments, and that the way you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/diversify-your-portfolio\/\">diversify your portfolio<\/a> matters more than exactly what is in it.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-move-your-money\"><strong>2. Move Your Money<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful investors keep their money on the move. The concept of the \u201cvelocity of money\u201d describes how your money should move: like an avalanche that grows larger as it picks up new assets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Technically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/v\/velocity.asp\">the term \u201cvelocity of money\u201d means the rate at which money is exchanged in an economy.<\/a> The healthier an economy, the more money is exchanged as people spend more on goods and services.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-don-t-follow-the-crowd\"><strong>3. Don\u2019t Follow the Crowd<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t invest in something just because it\u2019s popular. No one knows for sure what will be a good investment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Be particularly aware of possible speculative bubbles, where investors ignore rational valuations and invest based on logic other than intrinsic value.
