There are several methods by which you can learn how to gain peace of mind, serenity, and calm attitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try these strategies for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/quiet-mind\/\">quieting your mind<\/a> and attaining inner peace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peace of Mind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In his book <em>The Power of Positive Thinking<\/em>, Norman Vincent Peale explains how to gain peace of mind through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/eckhart-tolle-meditation-mindfulness\/\">meditation<\/a>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Empty your mind of fear, insecurities, regrets, and other negative emotions; you\u2019ll experience relief and release. After you empty your mind, refill it with positive, healthy thoughts and peaceful images.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: While Peale doesn\u2019t explain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/emptying-your-mind\/\">how to empty your mind<\/a> of negativity, one way is the Jewish ritual of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjewishlearning.com\/article\/tashlikh\/\"><em>tashlich<\/em><\/a> (\u201ccasting away\u201d). On the first day of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish new year), congregants symbolically cast their sins\u2014often physically represented by bread crumbs\u2014into a body of running water. This ritual helps Jews to let go of their fears and regrets from the past year, and face the coming year with a fresh mindset.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Use peaceful words and engage in peaceful conversations during your daily life.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: What Peale calls \u201csuggestive articulation\u201d is a practice more commonly referred to as reciting a <a href=\"https:\/\/chopra.com\/articles\/what-is-a-mantra\"><em>mantra<\/em><\/a>; a word or simple phrase that you can repeat many times in a row. Doing so focuses your attention and your willpower on what you want to do, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-become-the-person-you-want-to-be-2\/\">who you want to be<\/a>. For example, someone struggling with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/consequences-of-low-self-esteem\/\">self-esteem issues<\/a> might repeat, \u201cI am strong, I am intelligent, I am worthy.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Find time to sit in silence.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>The two exercises that Peale suggests\u2014emptying your mind and sitting in silence\u2014are different forms of meditation.&nbsp;<br><br>The first is a variation on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.successconsciousness.com\/blog\/meditation\/how-to-do-candle-meditation\/\"><em>candle meditation<\/em><\/a>. The idea of candle meditation is to either look at a candle flame or picture one in your mind, and think of nothing else. You should acknowledge any thoughts that intrude on your meditation, and then dismiss them; as you continue to practice, those intrusive thoughts should come less frequently and disappear more quickly. This is because candle meditations help you to develop focus and mental discipline.&nbsp;<br><br>Peale\u2019s second exercise is a type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/visualization-meditation\/\"><em>visualization meditation<\/em><\/a> that\u2019s designed to put you into a calm, content state of mind. Some would call this particular exercise a <a href=\"http:\/\/attentivehealth.com\/Events\/Happy%20Place%20Visualization.pdf\">\u201chappy place\u201d visualization.<\/a>&nbsp;Peale\u2019s emphasis on silence and solitude is meant to help you avoid distractions so that you can just be alone with your thoughts.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stop punishing yourself for some real or imagined sin. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-find-peace-within-yourself\/\">find peace of mind<\/a> by releasing your guilt and putting it in God\u2019s hands.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Peale says that if you feel guilty, it\u2019s because you\u2019re blaming yourself for something that you\u2019ve done or think you\u2019ve done. Marcus Aurelius (the author of <em>Meditations<\/em>, one of the definitive <a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/stoicism\/\">Stoic<\/a> texts) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/meditations\/books-4-6\">offers this advice about blame:<\/a><br><br><strong>Blame is pointless. <\/strong>People often cause harm because of ignorance, or by accident. Blaming people (including yourself) for what they don\u2019t know, or because they made a mistake, is pointless; it\u2019s much better to teach them (or learn) how to avoid that issue in the future.<br><br><strong>Blame is useless. <\/strong>Even if you <em>could <\/em>reasonably blame someone (again, including yourself), doing so wouldn\u2019t make the situation any better.
