It attracted a great deal of attention and commentary within academic journals as well as mainstream media as it rose to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/books\/best-sellers\/2018\/02\/25\/combined-print-and-e-book-nonfiction\/\">#12 on the <em>New York Times<\/em> Best Seller list<\/a>. Since publication, the authors have appeared on multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/how-democracies-die\/id1081584611?i=1000400956112\">podcasts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?458903-4\/washington-journal-steven-levitsky-discusses-book-how-democracies-die\">television interviews<\/a>, and have published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/23\/opinion\/sunday\/disenfranchisement-democracy-minority-rule.html\">joint op-eds<\/a> in major publications discussing the topics in the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-book-s-context\"><strong>The Book\u2019s Context<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Levitsky and Ziblatt\u2019s book was part of an outpouring of works by commentators, journalists, and political scientists in the wake of Donald Trump\u2019s surprise victory in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Other notable books from this period arguing that Trump\u2019s presidency was an attack on democracy include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timothysnyder.org\/books\/on-tyranny-tr\"><em>On Tyranny<\/em>: <em>Lessons From the Twentieth Century<\/em><\/a> (2017) by Timothy Snyder<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/trumpocracy-david-frum?variant=32117247967266\"><em>Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic<\/em><\/a> (2018) by David Frum<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/fascism-a-warning-madeleine-albright?variant=32128912916514\"><em>Fascism: A Warning<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>(2019) by Madeleine Albright<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/565060\/surviving-autocracy-by-masha-gessen\/\"><em>Surviving Autocracy<\/em><\/a> (2020) by Masha Gessen<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-critical-reception\"><strong>Critical Reception<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How Democracies Die <\/em>reviews were largely positive. The book was hailed by many as an important contribution to political science (especially in understanding the contemporary rise of right-wing populism) by publications like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/10\/opinion\/trumps-how-democracies-die.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/can-american-democracy-withstand-its-latest-assault\/2018\/01\/10\/7d364894-f487-11e7-beb6-c8d48830c54d_story.html\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a>. Former President Barack Obama even listed it as one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/barack-obama-books-2018-12#becoming-by-michelle-obama-1\">his favorite books of 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commentators viewed Levitsky and Ziblatt\u2019s work as an important analysis of how, in the modern era, a new wave of charismatic, demagogic outsiders have successfully eroded democratic norms in country after country <em>without <\/em>resorting to violent coups or military overthrows\u2014instead, winning elections legitimately and then using their power to rewrite the rules and lock their opponents out of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, some critics did think that the authors exaggerated or overplayed the threat to U.S. democracy posed by Trump. Writing in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/10\/opinion\/trumps-how-democracies-die.html\">Nicholas Kristof argued<\/a> that America\u2019s democratic institutions had stood up well to Trump at the time of the book\u2019s publication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristof and other critics argued that America\u2019s democratic system of government and tradition of democratic politics was older, more robust, and better-tested than those of countries like Venezuela, Peru, Hungary, and others profiled in <em>How Democracies Die<\/em>. As such, they argued, comparisons between those countries and the U.S. were inappropriate and misleading. In <em>The Guardian<\/em>, David Runciman argued that the book\u2019s approach of using comparative historical analysis of other democratic collapses to get insight into the contemporary U.S. situation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2018\/jan\/24\/how-democracies-die-review\">was fundamentally flawed<\/a>. Given the enormous differences between the contemporary U.S. and countries profiled in the book (like 1970s Chile or Weimar Germany), he believed the historical parallels only offered limited insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Critics on the political right, meanwhile, claimed that Levitsky and Ziblatt, with their harsh criticism of Trump and the Republican Party, were guilty of violating the very same democratic norms they purported to cherish. Writing in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>, reviewer Jason Willick argued that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/review-polarized-societies-and-how-democracies-die-1516836739\">the book demonized Republicans and conservatives<\/a> by representing them as a singular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/threats-to-democracy\/\">threat to democracy<\/a>. This demonization of one\u2019s opponents, argued Willick, was the very thing Levitsky and Ziblatt were warning against. He and other conservative commentators argued that <em>How Democracies Die <\/em>was an overly partisan work, calling out allegedly anti-democratic behavior by right-wing politicians while ignoring similar transgressions committed by the left and the so-called \u201cResistance\u201d to Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, some<em> <\/em>reviewers simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/10\/books\/review-trumpocracy-david-frum-how-democracies-die-steven-levitsky-daniel-ziblatt.html\">found the prose style somewhat dull and repetitive<\/a>, drifting too much into political science jargon for the average reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-commentary-on-the-book-s-approach\"><strong>Commentary on the Book\u2019s Approach<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Levitsky and Ziblatt establish the patterns and practices by which democracies succumb to authoritarianism, highlighting the shared characteristics of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/strongman-leaders\/\">authoritarian leaders<\/a> of the recent past (generally, though not exclusively, focusing on leaders who rose to power after World War Two). They then apply this analysis to Donald Trump and his surprising rise to power in the U.S., using the success of his campaign to indict the Republican Party\u2019s leadership for what they see as its failure to stop him from securing their nomination.
