If you like what you read here, there\u2019s plenty more to check out in the guide!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-millennials-so-stressed\">Why Are Millennials So Stressed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite their reputation for being entitled and self-absorbed, millennials are plagued by expectations that they should work tirelessly and efficiently to drive results, and guilt when they don\u2019t.&nbsp;Efficiency is appealing because it maximizes output in the short term\u2014but it leads to burnout in the long term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his book <em>The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People<\/em>, Stephen Covey calls this equilibrium between short-term output and long-term endurance the P\/PC Balance, illustrated by Aesop\u2019s fable of the goose that laid golden eggs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>P is the <em>production <\/em>of the results you want, represented by the golden eggs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PC is the <em>production capability<\/em>, or the thing that produces the results, which is the goose.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s hard to recognize when you\u2019re squeezing the goose too hard until it\u2019s too late. So, let\u2019s examine what happens when you lose P\/PC balance in your life and in your company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As an individual, wearing out your goose can manifest as burnout.<\/strong> Millennials have even been dubbed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/annehelenpetersen\/millennials-burnout-generation-debt-work\">\u201cburnout generation.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Millennials are now facing the consequences of their breathless pace, and it\u2019s leaving them feeling like that dead goose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Physically, Millennials have higher rates of hypertension, high cholesterol, and other conditions that paint a picture of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcbs.com\/sites\/default\/files\/file-attachments\/health-of-america-report\/HOA-Moodys-Millennial-10-30.pdf\">a generation whose health is deteriorating more rapidly<\/a> than previous generations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentally and emotionally, levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/low-mood-and-anxiety\/\">depression and anxiety<\/a> among young people is at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2016\/03\/for-80-years-young-americans-have-been-getting-more-anxious-and-depressed.html\">80-year high<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDeaths of despair,\u201d including overdoses and suicides, have recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/millennials-mental-health-burnout-lonely-depressed-money-stress#deaths-of-despair-are-also-on-the-rise-3\">risen more among Millennials<\/a> than any other generation.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In a business context, killing the goose means prioritizing profits over employees\u2019 talent development and general well-being. Succession management consultant Michael Timms has described how <strong>a <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/availleadership.com\/neglecting-the-goose\/\"><strong>profits-over-people approach creates a vicious cycle<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Company leaders focus on output and profits, neglecting succession planning (identifying and grooming future leaders internally) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/personnel-development\/\">employee development<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Due to the lack of planning, when an employee leaves, that worker\u2019s manager and coworkers often have to carry that weight while management finds and trains a new hire.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The heavy workloads mean workers don\u2019t have time to do long-term planning and strategic tasks, which puts them in a reactionary cycle of meeting deadlines and putting out fires.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stressed and tired, employees become demoralized. Some leave the company, exacerbating the cycle for those left behind.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, when new employees are hired, rather than <em>changing<\/em> the atmosphere, they\u2019re <em>absorbed<\/em> into it. They, too, become demoralized and soon leave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey writes that <strong>successful companies not only build trust and loyalty with their customers, but also invest in their employees<\/strong> by offering good pay and benefits, creating a nurturing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/building-a-positive-workplace-culture\/\">company culture<\/a>, and providing professional development. The executives at these companies understand that employees hold the PC to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-make-a-sale-2\/\">make sales<\/a>, provide high-level customer service, make quality products, and perform other tasks necessary to create profits (P).&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How did millennials become the burnout generation?
