Being proactive requires taking full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/you-are-responsible-for-your-own-actions\/\">responsibility for your actions<\/a> and decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue reading to learn what proactivity entails, why it makes your life better, and how to cultivate it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-be-proactive-not-reactive\"><strong>Be Proactive, Not Reactive<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Understanding that we always have the power to choose our thoughts, feelings, and actions makes it clear that every situation presents a choice between being <em>reactive <\/em>or <em>proactive<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>If you\u2019re <em>reactive<\/em>, your conditioning dictates how you respond<\/strong> to people and circumstances. This is the outside-in approach: External factors affect how you feel inside. Your physical environment (e.g. the weather) and social environment (e.g. how people treat you) determine how you feel and act.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>If you\u2019re proactive, you decide how you\u2019ll respond<\/strong> to create the results you want. With this inside-out paradigm, you mindfully choose your thoughts and actions based on values you\u2019ve chosen, cultivated, and internalized. You\u2019re still subject to rain and your boss\u2019s bad mood, but you suppress your reactive emotional impulses when you react.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-proactivity-vs-blind-optimism\">Proactivity vs. Blind Optimism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Stephen Covey, proactivity is different from blind optimism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Blind optimism means minimizing a problem or denying that it exists entirely.<\/strong> (Shortform note: Similarly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-toxic-positivity-5093958\">toxic positivity is an insistence on maintaining a positive outlook<\/a>, and in doing so it disregards all painful and difficult emotions. While often well-intended, this response causes shame and guilt for feeling bad, and it doesn\u2019t allow people to feel and process painful emotions, which is necessary for growth.)<\/li><li><strong>Proactivity means accepting difficult realities and determining how to resolve or make the most of them.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This difference has been underscored in <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.fedweb.org\/fed-115\/2\/toxic%2520positivity%2520and%2520Why%2520It%25E2%2580%2599s%2520OK%2520To%2520Not%2520Be%2520OK%2520Right%2520Now.pdf\">how people respond to systemic racial inequity<\/a>, especially as the issue has been more broadly publicized and acknowledged in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Blind optimists highlight increased awareness and activism, while glossing over persistent problems like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/18\/white-nationalist-hate-groups-southern-poverty-law-center\">swelling membership in hate groups<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/research-reports\/voting-laws-roundup-may-2021\">slew of voter suppression laws<\/a>.<\/li><li>Proactive people recognize progress while recognizing the work that still remains, and they address those issues through efforts like community organizing. When they have achievements along the way, proactive people view them as motivation to keep pushing, rather than a signal that the work is done.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-proactivity-demands-effort\"><strong>Proactivity Demands Effort<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its many benefits, being proactive is a critical first step to improving your life, but it\u2019s not always easy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>First, many people have let their proactivity muscles atrophy. <\/strong>Being proactive and taking initiative are actually natural human responses\u2014but, just like a muscle, if you don\u2019t practice these skills, they get weak. If you\u2019ve spent years blaming your circumstances and conditioning (for instance, \u201cMy parents raised me with this dysfunction.\u201d) for the problems in your life, it\u2019ll take some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/deliberate-practice-definition\/\">deliberate practice<\/a> to transition to a proactive paradigm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Second, being proactive means you have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/accepting-responsibility\/\">take responsibility<\/a> for your actions and their consequences. <\/strong>Now that you know that you can choose your thoughts, feelings, and actions, you have to acknowledge that, explicitly or implicitly, you\u2019ve chosen or allowed everything that\u2019s happened in your life\u2014good and bad.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-be-proactive\"><strong>How to Be Proactive<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve discussed <em>what<\/em> it means to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/habit-1-be-proactive-covey-7-habits\/\">be proactive<\/a>, but <em>how<\/em> do you adopt a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/proactive-mindset\/\">proactive attitude<\/a>? Following are six strategies for becoming proactive: two big-picture approaches and four actionable tips.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategy-1-big-picture-don-t-concern-yourself-with-issues-you-can-t-affect\"><strong>Strategy #1: Big Picture\u2014Don\u2019t Concern Yourself With Issues You Can\u2019t Affect<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey describes proactivity as focusing only on issues you can impact. Put another way, <strong>don\u2019t waste your energy worrying about problems you can\u2019t affect.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey illustrates this by drawing a \u201cCircle of Concern\u201d around all of your thoughts and worries. Some of those thoughts and worries are within a smaller circle, inside the Circle of Concern\u2014this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/circle-of-influence-covey-7-habits\/\">Circle of Influence<\/a>, which contains all the things that you can actually do something about. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/current-housing-market\/\">housing market<\/a> slump is in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/circle-of-concern-and-circle-of-influence\/\">Circle of Concern<\/a>, whereas your upcoming mortgage payment is in your Circle of Influence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/UhG5QqtXaoE-NypsOAaUQphZmwC6B74u-TKwesO00uzCZu3PmMunQx6ghb-uWxdTJEnuAFtxnMjANljopw-XplHG0ZJAD3C6-_A5z71OHNINaRSl5U0S7RoE9Y-lVcnioRfe-K9c\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey asserts that <strong>reactive people focus on issues outside their Circle of Influence.<\/strong> Spinning their wheels on things they can\u2019t control causes them unnecessary stress and reinforces feelings of victimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, <strong>proactive people spend their time and energy only on their Circle of Influence.<\/strong> Furthermore, they actually <em>expand<\/em> their Circle of Influence because, by definition, proactive people recognize and address the issues in front of them.&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/7uDFPxo0Q9jYlcaFbwplZLG_J-i0HpL9jM0Clojbw9dP3GF6z2uHTAJQmPd6aYcP-fGsp9LaN1aKRiN5_2h35UzWt8W2UzCqPzm5rHoWFYFtNTB9zBgqMOwH7xYZ_ke_8hR6PrmK\" width=\"312\" height=\"312\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/awkLDK74_8c45u4PdQ0ycnyGHE4AHa0GgPblXthEJqj6lC_Au4mWFEg_4w0Dua7-MOUyTsm3koC81L8Vm4dBLDSpDz75UNgQhQij_n7BUOLM_wf4W6VOfeo0XtbvG6HrlxKSUoK9\" width=\"312\" height=\"312\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategy-2-actionable-expand-your-circle-of-influence\"><strong>Strategy #2: Actionable\u2014Expand Your Circle of Influence<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The greater the number of concerns that fall within your Circle of Influence, the more control you have to eliminate the issues in your life and create change in your favor. Covey posits that you always have a choice in how you respond to a situation, and <strong>the key to expanding your Circle of Influence is learning how to respond with problems over which you have no direct control.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you made a list of everything that worries and upsets you\u2014from work stress to your kids fighting to climate change\u2014each issue would fall into one of three categories, which Covey labels:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Direct control<\/strong>\u2014Problems that are directly related to your actions<\/li><li><strong>Indirect control<\/strong>\u2014Problems that are related to other people\u2019s actions<\/li><li><strong>No control<\/strong>\u2014Problems that you have no ability to impact, including certain circumstances (like the the weather) and the past&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified what kind of issue you\u2019re dealing with, take the proactive approach:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>For direct-control problems, alter your behavior. <\/strong>Habits 1 through 3 are focused on changing your actions through habits.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>For indirect-control problems, focus on your interactions with other people <\/strong>and you may be able to influence their actions. Habits 4 through 6 address this through \u201cPublic Victories,\u201d which improve how you connect and communicate with others.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>For no-control problems, accept the unchangeable reality <\/strong>and make peace with it. Dwelling on the issue only empowers it to harm your mental and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/emotional-health-and-well-being\/\">emotional well-being<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Robert Cialdini&#8217;s Techniques of Influence and Persuasion<br><\/strong><br>When it comes to dealing with indirect-control problems, Habits 4-6 will discuss how to influence others from a Character-Ethic approach. However, building on that foundation, <strong>it helps to have some actionable Personality-Ethic techniques for influencing others.<\/strong>\u00a0<br><br>Marketing psychology professor Robert Cialdini outlined six psychological <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/influence-the-psychology-of-persuasion\/\">principles of persuasion<\/a> in his bestselling 1984 book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/influence-robert-b-cialdini?variant=32122116210722\"><em>Influence<\/em><\/a>. To be fair, the book is meant to be a warning about manipulative techniques used by professional persuaders, such as salespeople and politicians\u2014but it can also be read as a playbook. The six principles are:\u00a0\u00a0<br><br><strong>Reciprocity<\/strong>\u2014If you give someone a small gift or favor, they\u2019re likely to feel compelled to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/chapter-2\">repay you with a favor<\/a> in return. If you want someone to agree to a request, do something nice for them just because\u2014and <em>then<\/em> ask. Alternatively, you can make an initial ask for something absurdly large, and then pretend to concede and return with a second, more reasonable request; the other person will feel inclined to agree because you\u2019ve supposedly done the favor of settling for less.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Commitment\/Consistency<\/strong>\u2014If someone has already committed to a decision or position, however small, they will go out of their way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/chapter-3\">maintain that commitment<\/a>, even when it\u2019s illogical. If you, as the persuader, start by getting someone to agree to something small, you can capitalize on the person\u2019s commitment to working with you by making increasingly larger asks.\u00a0<br><br><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/social-proof-examples-cialdini\/\">Social Proof<\/a><\/strong>\u2014People assume that if many people are doing the same thing, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/chapter-4\">must be the right thing<\/a> to do. Thus, to influence someone to do something, emphasize that many other people are already doing that action. You can achieve this effect with testimonials and descriptors like \u201cfastest-growing\u201d and \u201chighest-selling.\u201d<br><br><strong>Liking<\/strong>\u2014Someone is more likely to comply with requests from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/chapter-5%5C\">people they know and like<\/a>, as well as with people who are associated with the known-and-liked people. In other words, when you\u2019re asking someone to work with you, name-drop some mutual friends you\u2019ve worked with. Also, be charming, look presentable, and make the other person comfortable; people are more open to requests from good-looking and likeable people, and people they believe like <em>them<\/em>.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Authority<\/strong>\u2014People are more inclined to comply with requests that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/chapter-6\">backed by experts<\/a> and people in authority (even people with titles and uniforms that merely look authoritative). So, to get people to follow your call-to-action, find an authority figure to endorse your message.<br><br><strong>Scarcity<\/strong>\u2014People find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/influence\/chapter-7\">rare and exclusive<\/a> things more appealing. As a result, you can make your offering more sought-after by making it appear scarce, as with limited-time-only and first-come-first-served promotions<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategy-3-big-picture-create-your-self-paradigm\"><strong>Strategy #3: Big Picture\u2014Create Your Self-Paradigm<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to becoming more effective (which is the goal, after all), Covey posits that the most critical paradigm is your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/self-paradigm-7-habits\/\">self-paradigm<\/a>: How you see <em>yourself <\/em>impacts how you see <em>others <\/em>and what you think, feel, and do. In other words, your self-paradigm can determine things like<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Whether you consider yourself a success or a failure<\/li><li>Whether you are grateful or skeptical toward someone\u2019s offer to help<\/li><li>What kinds of thoughts keep you up at night<\/li><li>What you do in your spare time<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey asserts that <strong>it\u2019s critical to your effectiveness that you consciously create your own self-paradigm<\/strong>\u2014otherwise, your self-image will be based on the feedback you take in from <em>other people\u2019s <\/em>opinions and actions toward you. That creates an inaccurate and disjointed self-understanding that causes you to behave dysfunctionally and ineffectively. The issue is threefold:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Though Covey doesn\u2019t explicitly make this connection, letting external forces shape the core of how you view yourself and the world is the epitome of an outside-in paradigm, which is a signature of reactivity.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Covey\u2019s description suggests your self-image would be unstable because it\u2019s subject to the flux of which outside influences you\u2019re exposed to and what message they\u2019re sending at any given time.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Covey argues that, if the people around you haven\u2019t developed their <em>own <\/em>self-paradigms, their reactions toward you are based on projections of their own thoughts and fears (as are your reactions toward them).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Building on that, if your self-paradigm is based on external feedback that\u2019s largely negative\u2014for instance, if your mother, your teacher, or society is telling you that you\u2019re destined for mediocrity\u2014then you\u2019re likely to act accordingly and create a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead, Covey urges you to reject their opinions and use your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/four-human-endowments\/\">four human endowments<\/a> to decide for yourself what\u2019s possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Merely imagining that <em>anything<\/em> besides your prescribed trajectory is possible can have life-changing effects, according to psychologist and researcher Carol S. Dweck. In her book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/44330\/mindset-by-carol-s-dweck-phd\/\"><em>Mindset<\/em><\/a>, she argues that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/mindset\/chapter-1\">course of your life can be determined<\/a> by whether you believe that your intelligence and abilities are unchangeable (a \u201cfixed\u201d mindset) or that they can evolve (a \u201cgrowth\u201d mindset).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategy-4-actionable-watch-your-language\"><strong>Strategy #4: Actionable\u2014Watch Your Language<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As you become aware of your self-paradigm, notice the words and phrases you use. Covey urges readers to be mindful of the words and phrases they use, which suggests <strong>that language <\/strong><strong><em>reflects<\/em><\/strong><strong> and also <\/strong><strong><em>reinforces<\/em><\/strong><strong> proactive or reactive paradigms.<\/strong> For example, a reactive person would say something like, \u201cI wish I didn\u2019t have to work at a job I hate.\u201d In reality, they made the choice to work at that job. They may have made the choice because the alternatives were worse, but it was a choice nonetheless. However, by failing to acknowledge that they had ownership of that decision, they reinforce a feeling of victimization and a lack of control, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, a proactive person might say, \u201cI\u2019m working at a job I don\u2019t like because it pays enough to help me pay off my debt, and I have a plan to get a better job when I\u2019m debt-free.\u201d They still acknowledge that they dislike the job, but they can own the decision to work there because they made that choice consciously and proactively; they have a clear <em>why<\/em>. (We\u2019ll talk more about the importance of a strong <em>why<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/habit-3-put-first-things-first-7-habits\/\">Habit 3<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transform-your-vocabulary\">Transform Your Vocabulary<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Since <em>7 Habits<\/em>\u2019s publication, research findings have confirmed the benefits of using positive, empowering language\u2014and the consequences of using disempowering language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In their 2012 book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/309487\/words-can-change-your-brain-by-andrew-newberg\/\"><em>Words Can Change Your Brain<\/em><\/a>, a neuroscientist and a communication expert assert that using positive language over an extended time makes <a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/blog\/words-can-change-your-brain-2#2\">lasting changes in your brain<\/a>. One result: You see yourself and others in a more positive light, and you may even view your entire reality more brightly.<\/li><li>Additionally, the authors\u2019 research revealed that using positive words <a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/blog\/words-can-change-your-brain-2#2\">stimulates the frontal lobe<\/a> of the brain, where the regions that control your <em>language<\/em> and your <em>movements<\/em> connect. In other words, positive language triggers your brain to turn your words into action.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Another study showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304395909004564\">negative words set off anxiety-<\/a> and stress-inducing hormones.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To transform your vocabulary, Robbins (<em>Awaken the Giant Within<\/em>) suggests being especially mindful of your habitual questions and metaphors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your habitual questions are primarily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/awaken-the-giant-within\/chapter-6\">the questions you ask yourself<\/a>, which triggers a sequence of thoughts on a subject. For instance, you\u2019re struggling to master a new skill, and you ask yourself \u201cWhy can\u2019t I get it?\u201d This question is negatively framed, and it easily leads to thoughts like \u201cI\u2019m not good enough\u201d and \u201cI should give up.\u201d By contrast, an empowering question like, \u201cHow can I alter my approach?\u201d leads to more constructive thoughts.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The metaphors you often use (such as, \u201cLife is like a box of chocolates\u201d) are particularly powerful because they evoke imagery that gives the phrase a bigger impact. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/awaken-the-giant-within\/chapter-7\">The vividness of metaphors make them especially potent<\/a> in influencing your thoughts, moods, and actions. For example, describing high crime rates as a <em>beast<\/em> of a problem that must be tamed has a more aggressive tone than saying that the issue is a social <em>ill<\/em> that needs to be diagnosed and treated from the source.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategy-5-actionable-learn-from-your-mistakes\"><strong>Strategy #5: Actionable\u2014Learn From Your Mistakes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proactive people acknowledge their mistakes and learn from them. <\/strong>Mistakes lie in your Circle of Concern: You can\u2019t change or undo them. Covey explains that you have two choices when confronted with a mistake:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Admit, accept, and learn from it. As mentioned, this is the proactive approach because it entails recognizing and addressing the problem on your terms, instead of letting the mistake bring you down. Instead of empowering the mistake, you put yourself back in control.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Rationalize, minimize, or dwell on it. This is the reactive approach, which actually doubles the mistake, because <strong>trying to cover up a mistake puts more focus on it, thereby reinforcing it.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/learn-from-your-mistakes\/\">Learn from your mistakes<\/a> as quickly as possible. <\/strong>Covey posits that the longer you go without learning from a mistake, the more likely you are to repeat it. This suggestion aligns with one of Tony Robbins\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/awaken-the-giant-within\/chapter-3\">habit-breaking techniques, which he calls pattern disruption<\/a>: When you catch yourself doing the action you want to change, abruptly interrupt it with something totally random (for example, stand up and shout something ridiculous). The interruption doesn\u2019t let the signals in your brain complete their usual course for that action; done consistently, these disruptions gradually weaken the brain wiring that triggers that behavior, which breaks the habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Silicon Valley Celebrates Mistakes<\/strong><br><br>Mistakes\u2014<em>making<\/em> and <em>learning from<\/em> them\u2014are crucial to building knowledge, improving skills, and innovating. In Silicon Valley, failure is such a virtue in the tech industry that the unofficial mantra has become, \u201cFail fast, fail often\u201d (though some say the emphasis on relentless ambition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2014\/jun\/28\/silicon-valley-startup-failure-culture-success-myth\">drives many to exhaustion<\/a>). There\u2019s even an annual conference called <a href=\"http:\/\/thefailcon.com\/about.html\">FailCon<\/a>, where people in the industry swap stories about their failures.&nbsp;<br><br>Netflix CEO Reed Hastings writes about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/no-rules-rules\/chapter-6\">importance of talking about failures<\/a> in his book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/606529\/no-rules-rules-by-reed-hastings-and-erin-meyer\/\"><em>No Rules Rules<\/em><\/a>, where he describes the philosophies that helped the company adapt and thrive. He insists that when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/no-rules-rules\/chapter-5\">leaders are transparent about their own mistakes<\/a>, it builds trust with your employees and encourages them to take risks, too.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-strategy-6-actionable-make-commitments-to-yourself-and-others\"><strong>Strategy #6: Actionable\u2014Make Commitments to Yourself and Others<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking action is one of the defining features of proactivity: Addressing problems will often require you to make and achieve a goal. Covey says to think of that goal as a commitment to yourself\u2014you\u2019re committing to taking steps to make concrete, proactive changes in your life. <strong>To increase your proactivity and overall effectiveness, <\/strong><strong><em>make<\/em><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><em>keep<\/em><\/strong><strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/commitment-to-yourself\/\">commitments to yourself<\/a> and to others.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Covey suggests a 30-day challenge to build your Circle of Influence. Try these tips to make more decisions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Build your decision-making muscles. <\/strong>Practice making decisions at every opportunity. Start with small choices, like what to have for dinner, and work your way up.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Don\u2019t be afraid of making the wrong decision.<\/strong> Mistakes and failures are inevitable\u2014learn from them.
