Stephen Covey asserts that they form at the intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire, all of which are necessary ingredients in a lasting habit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Knowledge<\/strong>: <em>What <\/em>do you need to do to achieve a result and <em>why<\/em>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skill<\/strong>: <em>How <\/em>do you achieve that result?\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Desire<\/strong>: What\u2019s your <em>motivation <\/em>to achieve it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, imagine you want to improve your interactions with others because you tend to talk more than you listen, which often leads to misunderstandings and tension. To change your habit, you need to address all three aspects of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First, you have to figure out <em>what <\/em>you\u2019re doing (not listening) and understand <em>why <\/em>that\u2019s creating the problem.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second, you have to learn <em>how<\/em> to become an active listener.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Third, you have to truly <em>want <\/em>to make the effort to change.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>More How-Tos on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/habit-formation\/\">Habit Formation<\/a><\/strong><br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/543993\/atomic-habits-by-james-clear\/\"><em>Atomic Habits<\/em><\/a> author James Clear explains that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/atomic-habits\/chapter-3\">a habit consists of four stages that result in a reward<\/a>, which creates a positive feedback loop. Here are the four stages, and how to engineer them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/form-a-habit\/\">form a habit<\/a> such as walking your dog each morning:&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Cue<\/strong>\u2014This is the stimulus that signals to your brain that there\u2019s an opportunity for reward. Make the cue obvious (put the dog\u2019s leash near the coffee pot as a visual reminder).<br><br><strong>Craving<\/strong>\u2014This is your desire for the reward, which creates your motivation for acting. Make the reward enticing to stimulate a craving (incorporate something you love into the walk, like listening to your favorite podcast).<br><br><strong>Response<\/strong>\u2014This is the action that you do in response to the cue, which triggers the reward. Make the action easy (put your walking shoes by the door).<br><br><strong>Reward<\/strong>\u2014This is the benefit or good feeling you gain from performing the action. Make the reward satisfying (take some quiet time to savor your coffee when you come home from your walk).<br><br>If this sounds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blog.theteamw.com\/2019\/04\/23\/the-science-of-habits\/\">like the conditioning process that Ivan Pavlov discovered with his famous drooling dogs<\/a>, that\u2019s because it is.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-habit-1-be-proactive\"><strong>Habit 1: Be Proactive<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Develop a proactive paradigm. In every situation, you have the choice of being reactive or proactive. If you\u2019re reactive, you let your habits and conditioning dictate how you respond to the people and circumstances around you; if you\u2019re proactive, you decide how you\u2019ll respond to create the results you want. <strong>Being proactive requires you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/accepting-responsibility\/\">take responsibility<\/a> for your actions and their consequences, but it also empowers you to take hold of your life and make significant changes to your mindset and behavior.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-habit-2-start-with-the-end-in-mind\"><strong>Habit 2: Start With the End in Mind<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Never losing sight of your long-term goals and values. Just like you have to do maintenance on your car to keep it running at peak capacity, you need to take care of yourself to continue functioning at your best.
