All resources fall into the following categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Material: raw materials, buildings, factories, vehicles, and machinery<\/li><li>Monetary: cash, credit, and stock options<\/li><li>Intellectual: brand equity, copyrights, patents, and knowledge databases<\/li><li>Human: experienced staff members and specialists<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Southwest Airlines <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Osterwalder and Pigneur suggest that you identify what resources you need to deliver your products and services\u2014this method often highlights the need to acquire more resources before you can move forward with your business model. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.leanstack.com\/how-to-achieve-breakthrough-by-embracing\/\">some businesses approach this in reverse: They use their resource limitations to inspire product and service innovations<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/southwest-airlines-marketing-strategy\/\">Southwest Airlines<\/a> once had to sell one of their planes to avoid filing for bankruptcy. Instead of seeking additional resources, they confronted this new constraint (limited funds and limited planes) and sought a way to maintain their existing routes with fewer resources. Their shift in focus from \u201cHow can we get more resources?\u201d to \u201cHow can we optimize our current resources?\u201d led them to make changes that drastically improved their flight boarding processes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southwest Airlines used its resource constraints to reposition its offering, differentiate itself from competitors, and become one of the most profitable airlines in the industry.
