As you practice this skill, you discover the truth about love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more to learn the truth about love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Being in God\u2019s Family Creates Unselfish Love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re each a product of God\u2019s love, so it makes sense that <em>love<\/em> serves as the foundation of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/spiritual-family\/\">spiritual family<\/a>. <strong>In loving your spiritual family, you\u2019ll learn the essential skill of <\/strong><strong><em>unselfish loving<\/em><\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Unselfish loving<em> <\/em>means loving others, even when it\u2019s difficult to do so\u2014such as when they\u2019re being rude, it\u2019s inconvenient for you, or they need too much from you. Learning this skill will take you a lifetime of work, and it certainly won\u2019t come as easily as loving your like-minded friends or your easy-to-love spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Truth About Love<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The work of learning and practicing unselfish love will reveal the truth about love:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Love Is the Most Important Part of Your Life<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth about love is that it is <em>central<\/em>. Throughout the Bible, God reveals the importance of relationships in our lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For example, <em>all Ten Commandments <\/em>are about relationships: Four of them apply to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/personal-relationship-with-god\/\">relationship with God<\/a>, and six of them apply to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/realationships-with-others\/\">relationships with others<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, long-term work like relationship-building is often pushed aside when more urgent wants or needs come up. <strong>Keep in mind that those wants and needs are confined to your life on earth\u2014your relationship with your spiritual family is <\/strong><strong><em>eternal<\/em><\/strong><strong> and therefore more deserving of your time and energy.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Love Is Best Expressed by Time<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We naturally spend more of our time and energy on things we love\u2014therefore, one of the greatest ways you can show someone love is simply <em>spending time on your relationship with them. <\/em>Your time reveals that they are important to you because time is a precious gift\u2014you have a finite amount of it. <strong>Giving some of your time to someone represents giving a small part of your life to them that you can\u2019t get back.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth about love is that it\u2019s not about giving things to people or thinking about them. <em>Love is about giving or sacrificing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/parts-of-the-self\/\">part of yourself<\/a> to someone.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For example, sitting with your elderly neighbor for tea is an expression of unselfish love. You likely have more interesting things to do with your time, but you sacrifice them to give your neighbor some companionship.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Love Should Be Shown Now<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing in life is guaranteed\u2014you don\u2019t know how long you have to show love to others. For this reason, it should be a top priority in your life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For example, you may not live to see tomorrow, a friend may move away, and your children are continually growing older.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, it\u2019s best to get started on showing love as soon as you can because one day you <em>will<\/em> be judged by God and will have to explain why you didn\u2019t spend more time and effort on showing love in your relationships.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Will you need to explain that staying late at work was more important than family dinners, or that you <em>knew<\/em> you should\u2019ve spent more time with someone, but didn\u2019t? Will you have to admit the unimportant activities that filled your schedule?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consider whether the way you\u2019re treating your relationships would make you feel ashamed when it comes time to explain yourself.<\/strong> Then, find ways to make your relationships a higher priority in your life\u2014for example, by staying after church to meet other members or scheduling regular coffee dates with a neighbor.
