Look for these in your own mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What if my worst nightmare comes true?<\/li><li>What will I do if [insert awful thing] happens?<\/li><li>Everything\u2019s out of control.<\/li><li>I\u2019m not good enough to handle this.<\/li><li>I probably said that the wrong way (or they took it the wrong way).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create a <strong>Mental Story Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to create a mental story map to deal with Christian anxiety:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Step 1: Draw your map.<ul><li>Write down your current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/innate-emotions\/\">primary emotion<\/a>. Draw a circle around it.<\/li><li>Around the circle, write contributing factors. Unfinished work? A relationship? Money? Circle each and draw a line to the central emotion.<\/li><li>Near each smaller circle, list how it contributes to your current emotion.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Step 2: Talk to God.<ul><li>Pray through each item.<\/li><li>Search the scriptures for relevant truths.<\/li><li>Ask God to reveal wrong thoughts about himself and yourself.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Step 3: Look for common patterns and themes in your map items (anxiety about things you can\u2019t control? anger at insults? self-criticism?).<\/li><li>Step 4: Notice the storyline your thoughts build about God. Is it true or false?&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: To learn a similar approach to \u201cminding your mind,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/cognitive-behavior-therapy-basics-and-beyond\">read our summary of <em>Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Basics and Beyond<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Use a variation on the mental story map tool that you learned in Part 1. <\/strong>This variation combines that tool with the strategy from Chapter 8 for reframing negative thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/Z63HNzFYcgmgh-68FEEN8uMcbu7BpgmM4uAtxj3ZP7IorUCYqwK7CJ0A-uwNzsK6QuK217Wd-KskZq_AjFsGY1n0qUG7nypwBxS5NWQjP_q0NrHjtFbFj8DNgSWXtzT6dR3BxhoK=s0\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Step 1: Write down one of your current anxious thoughts.<\/li><li>Step 2: \u201cDiagnose\u201d the thought: Is it actually <em>true<\/em>?<\/li><li>Step 3: Consider what God says about the thought. Does he say it\u2019s true? Consult scripture and trusted friends and mentors in your faith community to get their input.<\/li><li>Step 4: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/be-decisive\/\">Make a choice<\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/your-genius\/\">Who are you<\/a> going to believe? God or the lie?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For every one of the enemy\u2019s lies, find a scripture that directly contradicts it and replaces it. <\/strong>This strategy can be especially effective when combined with the strategy directly above. For example, if you\u2019re afraid of everyone abandoning you, then you could replace this with God\u2019s promise in Hebrews 13:5-6 that he will never abandon you. If you\u2019re afraid of failing publicly, you could replace this with God\u2019s promise in 2 Corinthians 12:9-11 that he takes weakness and uses it for his glory. This exercise leads you through practicing one of these, to beat Christian anxiety:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write one of your chief fears, something that persistently causes you anxiety and has the potential to knock you into a toxic thought spiral. (Are you afraid of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-people-closest-to-you\/\">close relationships<\/a>? Do you suffer from anxious thoughts about failing publicly at your job? Do you lose sleep because you\u2019re afraid for your family\u2019s safety?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What is the enemy\u2019s lie that fuels this fear?<\/li><li>What is one scriptural truth that contradicts or replaces this fear?<\/li><li>What additional strategies can you use to surrender the fear to God? (For example, apply Philippians 4:6-7; spend time reflecting on God as the deepest and truest reality; pay attention to the manifestation of your fear in your body; use the modified mental story map tool). How will you practice them?
