If you have a fixed mindset, you believe that you&#8217;re wired a certain way and can&#8217;t change. If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/growth-mindset-development\/\">have a growth mindset<\/a>, you believe you can grow if you put in the effort. You&#8217;re far more likely to change when you believe that you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how having a growth mindset can help you make behavior change a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-fixed-mindset-vs-a-growth-mindset\">A Fixed Mindset vs. a Growth Mindset<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are usually numerous setbacks throughout the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-process-of-change\/\">process of change<\/a>. <strong>Approaching these setbacks with the right mindset is the difference between change that succeeds and change that fails. <\/strong>There are two main types of mindset: <em>fixed mindset <\/em>and <em>growth mindset.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1) Fixed mindset: <\/strong>You believe that you are \u201cwired\u201d a certain way\u2014there are things you\u2019re good at and bad at, and they don\u2019t change. The way you act is simply a reflection of your natural abilities. For example, you avoid social situations because you\u2019re <em>naturally shy<\/em> or you volunteer for presentations because you\u2019re <em>naturally good at public speaking.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>People who have a fixed mindset usually don\u2019t take on new challenges because they fear failure and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/criticism-of-others\/\">judgment of others<\/a>. To them, failure indicates a lack of ability\u2014that presentation didn\u2019t go well, so you must <em>actually<\/em> be a bad public speaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2) Growth mindset: <\/strong>You believe that ability is something that can be practiced and built up over time. Those with a growth mindset value <em>effort<\/em> over <em>ability<\/em>\u2014they\u2019re more likely to be successful because they\u2019re not afraid of the hard work it takes to get there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>People who have a growth mindset aren\u2019t afraid of challenges because they know that trying new things will help develop their abilities\u2014and they see failure as a learning opportunity.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine the student trying to be more environmentally conscious takes her car to work\u2014a <em>half-mile <\/em>walk\u2014every day for a week due to iffy weather.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If she had a <em>fixed mindset<\/em>, she would say, \u201cI\u2019m a bad environmentalist. I can\u2019t even stick to this simple challenge. I should just give up.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><li>If she had a <em>growth mindset<\/em>, she would say, \u201cThis wasn\u2019t my best week, but I learned that I\u2019m prone to being thrown off by inconvenience. I\u2019ll have to be more aware of that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-developing-a-growth-mindset\">Developing a Growth Mindset&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The good news is, fixed-mindset people can <\/strong><strong><em>develop<\/em><\/strong><strong> a growth mindset. <\/strong>When facing a personal change or leading a group through a change, think about the different parts of the process and the <em>inevitable <\/em>failure you\u2019ll meet.<strong> <\/strong>Change processes usually have two distinct parts:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The first part of change involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-gather-information-2\/\">gathering information<\/a> about the best way forward and finding solutions to problems. This stage comes with a strong sense of hope and motivation.<\/li><li>The second stage involves synthesizing all these hopeful ideas into a coherent plan and starting action on it. This part often doesn\u2019t go entirely to plan, and can feel cumbersome and messy\u2014it\u2019s demotivating because it feels like failure.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When you reach this second stage, it\u2019s crucial to remember that <\/strong><strong><em>what looks like failure is in fact a learning process. <\/em><\/strong>Normalizing failure in this way reassures you (or the group you\u2019re leading) in several ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Failure is seen as an essential part of the process rather than a dreaded or shameful event.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It affirms that failure isn\u2019t the end of the road\u2014there\u2019s an \u201cother side\u201d of failure to reach.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you feel reassured enough to push through the messy stage of failure\u2014rather than quit\u2014your chances of success increase.
