Eyal calls these pre-commitments &#8220;identity pacts&#8221; because they should align with who your want to be and what you want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continye below to learn how to make an identity pact and change your self-image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Create Precommitments&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The last part of the<em> Indistractable <\/em>model focuses on locking yourself <em>into<\/em> traction, rather than keeping distractions <em>out. <\/em><strong>You accomplish this by using <em>precommitments<\/em>\u2014 a commitment to yourself that you make while in an undistracted state that will help guide your behaviors when you\u2019re tempted by distraction in the future.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For example, you might precommit to saving money by setting up a portion of your paycheck to automatically deposit in your savings account, instead of believing you\u2019ll make the right choice on payday.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Precommitments are the last piece of the indistractable model because their success depends on the first three elements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You must understand and manage your internal triggers. Otherwise, your internal discomfort will be strong enough to drive you away from your precommitments.&nbsp;<\/li><li>You can\u2019t fulfill a precommitment unless you set aside time in your schedule to do so.&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/external-trigger-vs-internal-trigger\/\">External triggers<\/a> can easily pull you off task.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three types of precommitments that can minimize the power of distraction: effort pacts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/precommitment-strategy\/\">price pacts<\/a>, and identity pacts. <strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>This article will focus on identity pacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Precommitment Type 3: Identity Pacts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-way-you-see-yourself\/\">the way you see yourself<\/a> can help you change your behaviors because you\u2019ll naturally act like the person you believe yourself to be. <strong>Identity pacts are a precommitment to the identity that aligns with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-become-the-person-you-want-to-be-2\/\">who you want to be<\/a> and what you want to do. <\/strong>These pacts help you<strong> <\/strong>think about your self-image and your behaviors and align them in two ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Changing Your Self-Image Changes Your Behaviors&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can make it more likely you\u2019ll perform certain behaviors by changing the way you talk about\u2014and see\u2014yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>For example, if you\u2019re trying to start running every day, don\u2019t think of yourself as someone who\u2019s <em>trying<\/em> to run more or <em>has<\/em> to run every day. You\u2019re more likely to stick to your exercise plan if you call yourself <em>a runner<\/em> or someone who <em>runs<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This applies to cultivating indistractable habits and making them an integral part of your identity\u2014think of yourself and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-talk-about-yourself\/\">talk about yourself<\/a> as someone who <\/strong><strong><em>is<\/em><\/strong><strong> indistractable when describing your behaviors:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You\u2019re not someone who <em>can\u2019t<\/em> take quick breaks to check Instagram. You\u2019re indistractable\u2014you <em>don\u2019t<\/em> take quick breaks, but you <em>do<\/em> schedule social media time.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It\u2019s not that you <em>can\u2019t<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-manage-distractions\/\">deal with distractions<\/a> from your coworkers. You simply <em>don\u2019t <\/em>deal with them.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Changing Your Behaviors Changes Your Self-Image<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultivating identity also works in the opposite direction\u2014you can change your <em>self-image<\/em> by changing your <em>behaviors<\/em>.
