They began getting turned down by banks for more loans. To pay off his debts, <strong>Sam Walton wanted to go public.<\/strong> In 1970, they consolidated the separate store partnerships into a single company, went on a roadshow, and went public, raising around $5 million.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-5ebeb4c5-b8ba-4744-a2ef-de0dce69ef8c\"><li>$1 in Wal-Mart shares in 1970 would be worth roughly $5,312 in 2018.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2f658983-cd51-43cc-bb51-5ade1cdc3654\"><strong>The Growth of Wal-Mart and its strategy of expansion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-85f0ace4-e816-45f0-b8ff-ce68a1e9d15b\"><li>Set up a store within a day\u2019s drive of a distribution center<\/li><li>Fill in the surrounding areas with stores until saturated<\/li><li>Add more distribution centers, and repeat<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a9bcb6ea-b92d-4825-ae1d-6d4d08d3770f\">The big competitors such as Kmart still weren\u2019t going into towns smaller than 50,000, while Wal-Mart was working in towns smaller than 5,000. While leapfrogging from big city to big city, the big guys spread themselves out and became subject to city politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-54f0a67b-7d35-4aed-a821-4012736631eb\">When serious competition did finally arrive, Wal-Mart stuck to its strategy: \u201ckeep our prices as low as possible by keeping our costs as low as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-ddf0d798-8e5f-4bcc-93b4-983976f19370\">To enable the expansion, Sam continued hiring people in operations and distribution to handle things he tended to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-f6f8bfb0-8eb7-4a4d-9b2d-24247627bb34\"><strong>Continued Growth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8401afd2-b98a-4886-bd5a-b208d9562b1c\"><strong>From 1970 to 1980, Wal-Mart relentlessly pursued its strategy and more than doubled every 2 years<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Year<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Stores<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Sales<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Profits<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1970<\/td><td>32<\/td><td>$31 million<\/td><td>$1.2 million<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1972<\/td><td>51<\/td><td>$78 million<\/td><td>\ufeff<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1974<\/td><td>78<\/td><td>$168 million<\/td><td>$6 million<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1976<\/td><td>125<\/td><td>$340 million<\/td><td>\ufeff<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1978<\/td><td>195<\/td><td>$678 million<\/td><td>\ufeff<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1980<\/td><td>276<\/td><td>$1200 million<\/td><td>$41 million<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>1984<\/td><td>600<\/td><td>$4500 million<\/td><td>$200 million<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-2347040a-eec1-45d2-a446-e049be8b6f43\">However, the growth didn\u2019t come without turbulence. In 1974, they faced a schism in the company, with one executive vice president (Ferold Arend) representing the old guard in merchandising and store management, and another executive vice president (Ron Mayer) representing the new guard in finance, data, and distribution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-ccfebb6c-bcc9-49e2-af5e-bdcf2ac55f7a\">Ron told Sam Walton he wanted to run his own company, and Sam feared losing him. Sam, CEO at the time, was contemplating taking a back seat to focus on his hobbies (such as quail hunting). To solve both these issues, Walton promoted Ron to CEO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sam Walton Becomes CEO<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-3f266852-f714-4eaa-9b00-f29bef03bb26\">But Sam Walton wasn\u2019t suited for retirement, and he wasn\u2019t able to be hands-off on management. He disagreed with some of Ron\u2019s decisions and intervened, and he worried about the company\u2019s schism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-61450f64-9ae5-445c-ae78-d1aed611e6a7\">30 months later, Sam returned as CEO. In response, Ron left with many of his loyal managers. This was called the \u201cSaturday night massacre\u201d and eventually led to a third of senior management leaving.
