She explains the four principles of worthiness and shares the three values you need to cultivate worthiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue below to learn what having a sense of self-worth means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Theory of Worthiness <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>The Gifts of Imperfection<\/em>, Bren\u00e9 Brown explores the concept of \u201cWholehearted living.\u201d <strong>This way of life is all about cultivating a sense of self-worth.<\/strong> It\u2019s about accepting that you\u2019re flawed, but recognizing that this doesn\u2019t impact your worth as a person.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brown claims that living Wholeheartedly has improved her life in many ways. She feels less anxious; happier; healthier, both physically and emotionally; and more accepting of herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Defining Worthiness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in exploring the theory behind self-worth is to define the term itself. In simple terms, worthiness is <strong>the conviction that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-good-are-you\/\">you are good<\/a> enough as you are, flaws and all<\/strong>. This conviction is underpinned by four key principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Principle #1: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-accept-yourself\/\">Accepting yourself<\/a> unconditionally.<\/strong> You shouldn\u2019t set prerequisites for being worthy\u2014for example, \u201cI\u2019ll be good enough once I\u2019ve lost that weight\u201d or \u201cI\u2019ll be good enough once I\u2019ve found a romantic partner.\u201d Instead, you need to embrace the idea that you\u2019re enough <em>now<\/em>, not <em>if <\/em>or <em>when<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Principle #2:<\/strong> <strong>Abandoning the idea that to be \u201cenough,\u201d you need to fit societal standards or other people\u2019s expectations.<\/strong> You\u2019re worthy as you are, no matter how well you \u201cfit in\u201d or what anyone else thinks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Principle #3: Rejecting the notion that you need to work for worthiness<\/strong>; that you need to earn self-worth by proving yourself or pleasing others. Your worthiness isn\u2019t rooted in your actions\u2014for example, being nice and making everybody like you. It\u2019s based on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/your-genius\/\">who you are<\/a><\/em>, not <em>what you do<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Principle #4: Believing that you deserve love and belonging.<\/strong> Brown\u2019s research suggests that people can\u2019t feel loved or like they belong unless they feel that they <em>deserve <\/em>love and belonging. In short, unless you cultivate worthiness, you\u2019ll never fully experience love or belonging\u2014and you\u2019ll suffer accordingly. Love and belonging are innate human needs. If you don\u2019t fulfill these needs, you\u2019ll struggle emotionally and physically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cultivating Self-Worth<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve learned what worthiness is, it\u2019s time to explore how you can cultivate it. Brown\u2019s research has suggested that there are three key values that you need to practice to generate worthiness. These are <strong>courage<\/strong>; <strong>compassion<\/strong>; and <strong>connection<\/strong>. These three values impact all ten guideposts for living Wholeheartedly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Brown, these three values are the <strong>gifts of imperfection<\/strong>\u2014gifts that we only have access to because we\u2019re flawed.
