What sets apart a big thinker from a regular person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you learn how to think big, you will become fully aware of your abilities. You will have the self-respect and confidence to know you\u2019re worthy of the job, the relationship, or the promotion. Your possibilities will be endless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five things that big thinkers do differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Think Big<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You are bigger, more important, more capable and worthier than you think.<\/strong> Where success is concerned, being \u201cbig\u201d isn\u2019t measured in inches or degrees or family background. Rather, it\u2019s measured by the size of your thinking. How big do your ambitions get? How confident are you in your abilities?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, many people can\u2019t see themselves as the boss, or in that big house, or in that career. They settle for less and sell themselves short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s wrong with thinking small? When you think small, you miss out on opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You see an advertisement for a job and think, \u201cI\u2019d love that! It\u2019s perfect.\u201d But you don\u2019t apply because you automatically think you\u2019re not good enough. Why bother?&nbsp;<\/li><li>You know a certain sales prospect would be a great fit with your company, but you don\u2019t bother to go for the account. They\u2019re probably too big for you.&nbsp;<\/li><li>You meet someone you really like, but you don\u2019t follow up or make plans. They\u2019re way out of your league.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you think too small, you become focused on your <em>inabilities<\/em>, and you don\u2019t seem to recognize your <em>abilities<\/em>. (Being <em>aware <\/em>of your inabilities is healthy, it\u2019s fixating on them that\u2019s problematic.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that you can learn how to think big by adopting the &#8220;big-thinker attitudes&#8221;: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Don\u2019t think little of yourself. Concentrate on your assets.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Use positive \u201cbig thinking\u201d words.<\/li><li>See possibilities in every situation and every person, including yourself.<\/li><li>View your work as important.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t sweat the small stuff. Focus on what\u2019s really important.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) <strong>Big Thinkers Don\u2019t Think Little of Themselves<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to fixate on your weaknesses and ignore your strengths. This can be self-limiting, if you feel less capable than you really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To accept your full worth and stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/selling-yourself\/\">selling yourself<\/a> short, try this fun exercise. It helps you do a reality check and realize just how capable you really are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Write down your five best \u201cassets\u201d (education, appearance, skills, attitude, initiative.) Get some objective input from trusted friends, your spouse, and perhaps colleagues. Look for someone who can give an honest opinion.<\/li><li>Next, under each of your five assets, list three people you know of who have achieved great success, but <em>don\u2019t<\/em> have this asset to as high a degree as you.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re done, you\u2019ll see that you score better in certain areas than even highly successful people you admire. You have concrete proof that you\u2019re bigger than you think. This is inspiration to fit your thinking to your true size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) <strong>Big Thinkers Use Positive Words<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To become a big thinker, we must develop a \u201cbig thinker\u2019s vocabulary.\u201d This isn\u2019t about using big words &#8212; it\u2019s using words that paint a picture of positivity and success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, it\u2019s important to understand that when you speak or write, you are essentially painting a picture in the minds of others. If someone tells you, \u201cCarol bought a house,\u201d one picture comes to mind. But if they said, \u201cCarol bought a garden cottage,\u201d another picture entirely comes to mind. Words have power to create images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big thinkers use words that paint a positive, hopeful picture.<\/strong> A small thinker might say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry to say this project has failed.\u201d But a big thinker would say something like, \u201cWe\u2019re going to try a new approach with a great chance of succeeding.\u201d In the first instance, the listeners likely felt defeated and sad. In the second, they would feel more encouraged and ready to try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are four ways to develop a big thinker\u2019s vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When talking about <strong>yourself<\/strong>, use positive, bright words.&nbsp;<ul><li>For example, if someone asks you how you are, don\u2019t answer, \u201cI\u2019m awful. I have a headache and I\u2019m getting sick.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><li>Contrast that with, \u201cI\u2019m wonderful!\u201d Speaking positively about yourself helps you <em>feel<\/em> wonderful and positive; as a bonus, others react much more favorably to you.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>When talking<strong> about others<\/strong>, use cheerful, favorable words. If what you say gets back to that person, be sure it\u2019s something that makes them feel good, such as, \u201cshe\u2019s so talented.\u201d Cutting down other people only paints <em>you<\/em> in a negative light.<\/li><li>When talking <strong>to others<\/strong>, use sincere, complimentary language. Genuinely compliment others\u2019 appearance, achievements, family, and talent. Sincere praise helps others feel good about themselves and about you. Apply this in the workplace and outside of work.<\/li><li>Use positive words when outlining a <strong>plan<\/strong>. When talking about a project, say, \u201cWe have a great opportunity,\u201d instead of something like, \u201cWe have to do this, whether we like it or not.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) <strong>Big Thinkers See Possibilities, Not Just What Is<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Big thinkers have trained themselves to see the possibilities in a situation, in business, in themselves, and in other people. <strong>They see what <\/strong><strong><em>can be<\/em><\/strong><strong>, not just what is.<\/strong> A big thinker visualizes what can be done in the future. They aren\u2019t limited to today\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing what can be possible\u201d applies to business opportunities. For example, think of a huge plot of land for sale in the countryside. A small-thinking realtor would market a large plot of land, period. But a big-thinking realtor or developer might see and market this land as a farm, a horse-riding venue, a wedding venue, a luxury rural getaway &#8212; the possibilities are endless.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing what can be possible\u201d applies to how you treat customers. A small thinker sees a customer as one $20 transaction. But a big thinker sees the possibility of a lifetime of repeat business that, with referrals, can grow into thousands of dollars a year in revenue. Big thinkers see the possibilities in every customer and every sales transaction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing what can be possible\u201d applies to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-you-see-yourself\/\">how you see yourself<\/a>.&nbsp; <strong>Big thinkers see themselves as they <\/strong><strong><em>can <\/em><\/strong><strong>be, not just as they are at present. <\/strong>A small thinker might see herself as a student. A big thinker, however, sees herself as an up-and-coming, breakthrough photographer. When you see the possibilities in yourself, you begin to understand that <strong>it isn\u2019t what you have today that\u2019s important, it\u2019s <\/strong><strong><em>what you\u2019re planning to accomplish<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing what can be possible\u201d applies to how you see other people. People are an enormous and valuable resource. For example, a small-thinking teacher might look at a kid with poor grades who\u2019s always in trouble as someone not worth her time. But a big-thinking teacher could see a smart child with unique talent who needs nurturing to become a leader, and who might be grateful for life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To practice seeing the world in terms of possibilities, adopt a \u201cadd value\u201d attitude. Think, \u201c<strong>what can I do to add value <\/strong>to this situation\/to another person\/to myself?\u201d This positive thinking gets you to imagine the improvements that are possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) <strong>Big Thinkers Take a Big View of Their Work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people view their job as dead end. They adopt a philosophy of, \u201cI\u2019m here for the paycheck.\u201d They do just enough to complete their work adequately. This is an example of small thinking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big thinkers think their job is always important.<\/strong> They find ways to make a difference, big or small. Big thinkers see themselves as members of a team. They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/act-as-if\/\">act as if<\/a> everything in a company or organization affects them. They see the end goals and see themselves as a critical part of the organization reaching those goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you apply this \u201cbig view\u201d to your work, you\u2019ll find yourself coming up with new, creative ideas for making things better. This attitude will undoubtedly be noticed and rewarded with praise and more responsibility, and your self-confidence will skyrocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) <strong>Big Thinkers Don\u2019t Sweat the Small Stuff<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Too often, people with enormous potential let insignificant, petty, small stuff get in their way. When you let this happen, you\u2019re thinking small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few examples, with how to shrug off small annoyances:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Public speaking<\/strong>: A lot of people are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/public-speaking-nerves\/\">nervous about public speaking<\/a>. The advice they get is about small instructions: \u201cstand straight. Don\u2019t read from your cue cards. Don\u2019t speak too quickly or slowly.\u201d Fixating on all these minutiae is paralyzing and worsens anxiety.<ul><li>Instead, think big. <strong>Concentrate on what\u2019s important &#8212;&nbsp; your message. <\/strong>Have something important to say, and feel a burning desire for others to hear it. Everything else comes naturally. Your listeners will forgive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/small-problems\/\">small issues<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Arguments<\/strong>: Many arguments start out over small, petty matters that escalate. When you\u2019re done fighting, you can\u2019t even remember why you started.&nbsp;<ul><li>Big thinkers stop and ask themselves, \u201c<strong>Is this really important? Will this matter in a week?<\/strong>\u201d Usually it\u2019s not important. When you stop an argument from escalating and restore peace, you save time and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/emotional-energy\/\">emotional energy<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Perceived slights<\/strong>: Sometimes you get the short end of the stick. You get assigned to the small office, or are left off a group text.Small thinkers get offended in these situations. They feel resentment, and then they misbehave, worsening the relationship.<ul><li>Big thinkers don\u2019t sweat the small stuff. They let slights go and simply place no importance on trivial matters. Keep thinking big &#8211; what <em>really<\/em> matters for your personal goals?
