Is there a way to prevent it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The immediate proximal cause of Alzheimer\u2019s Disease is amyloid plaques in the brain\u2014the plaques damage neurons and neuronal networks. A total cure for people with Alzheimer\u2019s is likely impossible, given that the neuron networks have been damaged, but prevention may be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article takes a look at how to prevent Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, supported by research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/strong>: Causes and Risk Factors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The root cause of Alzheimer\u2019s could be vascular in nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Atherosclerosis is associated with Alzheimer\u2019s and lost brain function<\/li><li>Cholesterol may help seed amyloid plaques. Autopsies show that brains of Alzheimer\u2019s patients have significantly more cholesterol buildup than brains without Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While genetics has been implicated in, it\u2019s not the full story. The environment affects risk of Alzheimer\u2019s too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Migration studies show that Japanese men in the US have dramatically higher Alzheimer\u2019s rates than native Japanese people. Similarly, African-Americans show higher risk than Africans in Nigeria.<\/li><li>The closest link to explain this discrepancy is animal fat consumption. Non-meat eaters cut their risk of dementia by half.<\/li><li>A mutated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/apoe-4\/\">ApoE4<\/a> gene is implicated for increasing Alzheimer\u2019s risk dramatically\u2014a person homozygous for this mutated gene increases risk by 9x; a heterozygous person has 3x the risk. What does the protein ApoE4 do? It\u2019s a major cholesterol carrier in the brain.<ul><li>For people with homozygous mutations, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol cuts risk of Alzheimer\u2019s from 9x to 2x.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Prevent Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some dietary guidelines for how to prevent Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A diet with <strong>less saturated fat <\/strong>relative to unsaturated fat is protective against Alzheimer\u2019s. In a population study, people with the highest level of saturated fat intake had a 60% greater chance of cognitive deterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Antioxidants <\/strong>from the diet may cross the blood-brain barrier and protect against oxidative damage in the brain, inhibiting the formation of the plaques that cause Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Women who ate one serving of blueberries and two servings of strawberries a week had slower rates of cognitive decline, by as much as 2.5 years.<\/li><li>People who drank fruit and vegetable juices regularly had 76% lower risk of Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/li><li>This effect may be mainly caused by polyphenols\u2014concord grapes and cranberries are especially rich in these compounds.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saffron<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Saffron was better than placebo in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/ways-to-improve-cognitive-function\/\">improving cognitive function<\/a> among patients with mild dementia.<\/li><li>In a double-blind study, it was as effective as the drug donepezil (Aricept), a drug used to enhance cognition for Alzheimer\u2019s patients.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eat less meat <\/strong>to reduce the level of advanced glycation end products (AGEs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>AGEs are formed by dry-heating fat-rich and protein-rich foods. Chicken, bacon, and hot dogs are the worst offenders. Baking, broiling, and grilling such meats is far worse than boiling or steaming.<\/li><li>AGes accelerate aging by cross-linking proteins, which causes tissue stiffness, oxidative stress, and inflammation.<\/li><li>People with higher AGEs in their diet show faster loss of cognitive function.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Exercise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Aerobic exercise reversed age-related shrinkage in brain and improved memory performance.
