Some members of the group will join an activity right away while others will lack interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue on to learn how to manage group behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-e62860f3-e529-443a-9dac-8b590a3e01a1\">Breaking Down <strong><strong>Group Behavior<\/strong><\/strong>s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-16482dc5-4b0a-48aa-bf8f-bd04784bab6a\">Each individual in a group has their own personal Action Line for any particular behavior based on their distinctive configuration of motivation and ability. For any particular group behavior, we can identify four subgroups based on these motivation\/ability combinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-f5a9b893-00df-4556-bf43-222367add326\"><li><strong>Dolphins <\/strong>have high ability and high motivation.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Turtles <\/strong>have low ability and high motivation.<\/li><li><strong>Crabs <\/strong>have high ability and low motivation.<\/li><li><strong>Clams <\/strong>have low ability and low motivation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-b729c5e9-953b-4bd9-a6c6-0608f654cfda\">We can plot this in relation to the Action Line as follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-5980efcd-8ecd-479e-86b6-215a860461c6\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/WSit9Xz23zdAQAjbUQxR1xB4FCrew-dpfbTRLECGvhhw4HwMmXT8v5oG8ZoHP5JDULiKVOq__B1gU95OjXhI_fbuKuK3wVFrMq9igPfosR1mkAxgWkDnpZ1j96EoPou_BXs9sN9-\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is WSit9Xz23zdAQAjbUQxR1xB4FCrew-dpfbTRLECGvhhw4HwMmXT8v5oG8ZoHP5JDULiKVOq__B1gU95OjXhI_fbuKuK3wVFrMq9igPfosR1mkAxgWkDnpZ1j96EoPou_BXs9sN9-\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-9b384ab8-a864-4a19-b483-f884c1bdbb49\">[image] tinyhabits-crabsclams.jpg<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-58b9c735-1502-4a9b-95f0-09692a119d81\">Motivation is difficult to change. Therefore, to encourage a group behavior, <strong>focus on the Dolphins and Turtles<\/strong>. This can be a revelation for managers or group leaders who\u2019ve been trying to target all four groups at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-11a842f1-9b6a-47cb-869f-9a0fbfab0166\">For example, imagine you\u2019re trying to organize a walking challenge at work. You\u2019ve sent out an email (the prompt), but have received few responses. What do you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-1a25938a-c027-4894-9ff4-b4356f7822ed\"><li>You don\u2019t need to worry about the Dolphins\u2014they\u2019ve already replied to the prompt and are preparing enthusiastically for the challenge.<\/li><li>Focus on the Turtles. How can you make the behavior easier for them?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Leave the Crabs and the Clams for now. Maybe their motivation levels will increase when they see their colleagues preparing, or maybe they\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-be-more-motivated\/\">be more motivated<\/a> to participate in an alternative group event, such as a food drive.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-99b93ab0-32f6-4948-bf9a-6c19d0b80bac\"><strong>The Queen B Solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c4b99f2c-6177-4d17-96f7-405d588f5a8a\">This is a high-level solution for situations in which it\u2019s not possible to go back and revisit your Swarm of Bs (behaviors): the behavior itself can\u2019t be changed. The only option is to manipulate motivation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-fe8e0751-8b99-4569-9d00-bb6f4e5faf4f\">Consider the walking challenge. If it\u2019s very important to include the Crabs and Clams, <strong>think of some different ways you could increase their motivation<\/strong>. Can you offer an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-incentive-meaning-and-definition-economics\/\">incentive<\/a>, such as free sports gear, free movie tickets, or the chance to network with high-ranked managers? Can you link the challenge to a donation to a charity that\u2019s important to your group members?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-b471a7b3-12c9-497f-90e9-9a1ba510a26c\"><strong>Troubleshooting Behaviors in Other People<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8cbbcb09-de71-4a22-a5f3-8b1b8dc1994b\">When trying to change a group&#8217;s behavior, our tendency is to focus on motivation first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-ea827564-3f40-4495-acb2-390d84425139\">Flip this. <strong>Use the following sequence to troubleshoot behaviors in others.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-37b31ec8-4cc2-4f0a-8c31-44abff60cef9\"><li>Check the prompt. Ask them: Do you have an adequate reminder?<\/li><li>If the behavior doesn\u2019t change, check ability. Ask them: What\u2019s making this difficult for you?<\/li><li>If the behavior still doesn\u2019t change, consider motivation. Explain why the behavior is important. Consider introducing rewards or punishments (if appropriate).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-cae1161a-d670-48d7-9aa5-c1b3ebf093c4\">For example, your employees consistently arrive late to a meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-41903aaa-03af-4937-bc46-74c1c9098160\"><li>Check the prompt: Do they have an appropriately timed reminder? If not, set up automatic reminders, or remind them yourself.<\/li><li>Check ability: What is making it difficult for them to arrive on time? Do they have another meeting scheduled immediately beforehand? If so, shift the meeting to a different timeslot.<\/li><li>Check motivation: Is there something unappealing about the meeting itself?
