In the words of Maxwell, the Law of Legacy states that &#8220;a leader\u2019s lasting value is measured by succession.\u201d\u00a0He believes that leaders should decide early on what kind of legacy they want to leave behind and then work towards building it while still in the leadership position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn about Maxwell&#8217;s Law of Legacy and some real-world examples of its application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more TRead more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Law of Legacy: Think About Your Lasting Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Because leaders work with people, including other leaders, they have the potential to influence beyond their own lifetime.<\/strong> For example, many people still admire Gandhi and live by his teachings. Therefore, all leaders should be concerned with succession and legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clara Boothe Luce came up with the phrase \u201clife sentence.\u201d The sentence both states the goal of your life and describes your legacy. <strong>Your \u201clife sentence\u201d will likely change over the course of your life, and as it does, look for things that each of the sentences have in common.<\/strong> This will help direct you toward your legacy. For example, John C. Maxwell started with a life sentence about wanting to be a great pastor. Later, he wanted to be a communicator, writer, and leader. He finally settled on: \u201cI want to add value to leaders who will multiply value to others.\u201d This sentence encompasses all the things he wanted to be over the years <em>and <\/em>addresses his legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some steps to developing your legacy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Decide what your legacy will be <\/strong><strong><em>early<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong> Consider your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/having-a-purpose-in-life\/\">sense of purpose<\/a>, strengths, opportunities and whom you might be able to impact. Some people accept rather than drive their lives\u2014instead <em>choose<\/em> how you will live your life.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Start living your legacy while you\u2019re still in your leadership position\/still alive.<\/strong> Follow laws #6 (leaders are trustworthy and have good character) and #13 (leaders <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/a-leader-leads-by-example-not-by-force\/\">lead by example<\/a>). Be what you want to inspire in others.<\/li><li><strong>Pick successors.<\/strong> Legacy is about people, not things. An inanimate building named after you isn\u2019t going to be able to influence people.<ul><li>For example, people can judge how good of a person you are by your grandchildren. You\u2019ve trained your kids, and how well they train your grandchildren is a measure of how well you did with them.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Create a succession plan.<\/strong> If you\u2019re a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/characteristics-of-a-good-leader\/\">good leader<\/a>, and your successor is a good leader, that\u2019s a good start, but there needs to be a handoff.&nbsp;<ul><li>For example, Tom<\/li><li>&nbsp;Mullins of EQUIP is training his son to be his successor. His son has already taken over many of Tom\u2019s responsibilities, even though Tom is still the leader. This allows his son to practice under Tom\u2019s guidance.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are four phases of legacy development:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Solo.<\/strong> Leaders <em>achieve <\/em>things by themselves.<\/li><li><strong>Add followers.<\/strong> Leaders are <em>successful <\/em>when followers do things for them.<\/li><li><strong>Add other leaders.<\/strong> Leaders are <em>significant <\/em>when their leaders do things with them.<\/li><li><strong>Remove original leader.<\/strong> Leaders create a <em>legacy <\/em>when their leaders are capable of doing things without them.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example of a Failed Application of the Law: Oscars \u201cIn Memoriam\u201d Montage\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every year during the Oscars, the program shows clips of people who have died during the previous year. These people receive different amounts of applause during the montage, but after it\u2019s over, everyone refocuses on the Oscar nominees. <strong>People aren\u2019t remembered for their accomplishments; they\u2019re measured by how well their successors continue their work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example of a Successful Application of the Law: Mother Teresa<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mother Teresa\u2019s leadership lived on after she died because she developed leaders who would carry on her vision.<\/strong> Her order still welcomes new nuns in a ceremony conducted at her tomb.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the Law of Legacy?
