So, what exactly is post-truth? Essentially, it refers to a political phenomenon where political issues are framed in such a way so as to appeal to people&#8217;s emotions. According to Yuval Harari, people have always lived in the era of post-truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading for the answer to the question \u201cwhat is post-truth?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Post-Truth and How Did We Get to It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We are living in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/post-truth-world\/\">post-truth society<\/a>, in which lies aren\u2019t merely spread in social media posts, but they are also used to justify government actions. For example, when Russia invaded Crimea in 2014, the Russian government repeatedly denied responsibility for the invasion. The government rationalized that its lie served a higher purpose, which was to reunify Ukraine with Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did we get to this era of post-truth? The phenomenon has a long history. In fact, the great accomplishments of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/human-progress\/\">human progress<\/a> are owed in part to humans\u2019 ability to create and get others to believe fictional stories in order to work together toward a collective goal. Storytelling is used in this way by different kinds of institutions, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Religion: <\/strong>The stories found in the Bible, Quran, and other holy texts have inspired millions of people to work together to build cathedrals, fight oppression, and even fight wars.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Nations:<\/strong> Governments spread stories in order to justify their actions and spur public support for their causes. For example, Japan faked attacks on itself in order to justify invading China, and Israel ignored the existence of Palestinians in defending its pursuit of land.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Political movements: <\/strong>The leading forces in political movements promote stories\u2014or propaganda\u2014to reinforce an image of their politics. For example, Joseph Stalin took a photo with a young, smiling girl and posted the image everywhere in order to promote the fantasy of a happy childhood under Soviet rule, despite the reality of terror and brutality.<\/li><li><strong>Corporations:<\/strong> Big businesses create stories to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-sell-a-product\/\">sell their products<\/a>. For example, Coca-Cola fills its ads with images of young, healthy, vibrant Coke drinkers to weave a story that Coca-Cola is linked to youth and vitality, even though drinking soda leads to obesity and other health issues.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone has a responsibility to question and investigate the information she consumes, and to keep an eye out for biases she unknowingly has.<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/you-cant-know-everything\/\">You can\u2019t know everything<\/a>, but you can take two important steps:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Pay for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/what-is-quality-information\/\">quality information<\/a>. <\/strong>Truth is critical in guiding how you act, especially in the face of the 21st-century challenges we are facing. Paying for high-quality information is worth the investment.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Do your research on topics that matter to you.<\/strong> It\u2019s impossible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/become-an-expert\/\">become an expert<\/a> in everything, but research issues that are especially important to you.
