For example, engines are complicated, but with study, you can see how the parts connect and behave, and you can predict what will happen if you change a part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, <em>complex<\/em> systems are nonlinear with infinite components and interactions that are enabled and speeded up by global technology. A key feature<strong> <\/strong>of these systems is that<strong> small events can have ripple effects that build to an outcome no one could have imagined<\/strong>. An example is the Tunisian fruit vendor\u2019s act of self-immolation in 2010 that launched the Arab Stpring protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Global connectedness generated these far-reaching effects because the man\u2019s cousin videoed his act and posted it on YouTube. Other protests erupted and videos of those events were posted. Soon Arabs everywhere took to the streets and within three months, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/arab-spring-movement\/\">the Arab Spring<\/a> had undermined the governments of Egypt, Libya, and Syria. No government responded effectively to the chain reaction because there was no way to predict it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding Complexity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In 1961, Edward Lorenz had a key insight into complexity that became known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-butterfly-effect-theory\/\">butterfly effect<\/a><\/strong>. While manipulating weather data with numerous variables, he realized that a tiny change he made in rounding the data had a huge cumulative effect on the results. This led him to two theories about interconnectedness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1)<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/complicated-system\/\">Complex systems<\/a> have countless parts that interact in countless ways.<\/strong> Therefore, a small event could trigger a chain of interactions that has a cumulative impact over time. Illustrating this, Lorenz theorized that <strong>the flap of a butterfly\u2019s wings in Brazil could start a chain of billions of interactions in air currents leading to a tornado in Texas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/no-one-can-predict-the-future\/\">Predicting the future<\/a> in a complex system is nearly impossible because any number of interlinked factors could come into play and affect the outcome<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of complex systems with interconnected parts making prediction impossible include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Weather<\/strong>: A small disruption could set off interactions that build to an extreme outcome far away.<\/li><li><strong>Economies<\/strong>: Failure of a single financial institution could have no effect or upend an entire economy.<\/li><li><strong>Ecosystems<\/strong>: A virus could mutate and spread through a population, reducing some species and thereby affect the food chain and biological balance.<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the difference between complex vs complicated systems?
