The reality is that people stop listening when <em>they<\/em> don\u2019t feel <em>heard<\/em>. If we feel like someone isn\u2019t listening to us, they probably feel the same way about us. The way to get someone to listen to you is to put a genuine, concerted effort into making sure they feel heard <em>first<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cBlame is about judging, and looking backward.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Blame is about judgment and looking backward as opposed to moving forward towards a mutually accepted resolution. Even if you can answer the question of who\u2019s to blame, it doesn\u2019t usually help solve the problem. With blame comes punishment, and punishment comes at a cost \u2014 understanding and punishment don\u2019t usually go hand in hand. When people are afraid of being blamed and thus being punished, they\u2019re usually less likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-power-of-your-words\/\">be truthful<\/a> or open about the matter, and less likely to apologize, since it seems like an admission of guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cStudies show that while few people are good at detecting factual lies, most of us can determine when someone is distorting, manufacturing, or withholding an emotion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Unresolved or unaddressed feelings can come through in our tone of voice, our posture, and our language. And you might think you can conceal it, but you\u2019re wrong. Psychological research shows that most people are bad at picking up on factual lies, but good at picking up on unspoken emotion. Unexpressed emotions can even cause you to totally break away from relationships based on how many unresolved feelings you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201cThe truth is, intentions are invisible. We assume them from other people\u2019s behavior. In other words, we make them up, we invent them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know our own intentions, so we never question them. But we never <em>know<\/em> the other person\u2019s true intentions unless we ask \u2014 and we rarely do that in the midst of a conversation. Instead, we try to read people&#8217;s intentions based on their behavior and the impact it had on us. This often leads to unfounded assumptions. We assume that cutting remark was <em>meant<\/em> to hurt us, even though we know our own remark that seemed to hurt the other person\u2019s feelings <em>wasn\u2019t<\/em> meant to hurt them.
