What are the chances of going into labor slightly early, at 36 weeks, 37 weeks, or 38 weeks? Find out here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>18% of babies are born week 38, 30% on week 39, and 17% on week 40. In sum, <strong>70% of babies are born before their due date. <\/strong>So this is quite normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the chance of pregnancy for every week you reach:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Week of pregnancy<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Chance of birth this week if still pregnant this week<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>35<\/td><td>3%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>36<\/td><td>5%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>37<\/td><td>11%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>38<\/td><td>25%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>39<\/td><td>46%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>40<\/td><td>59%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>41<\/td><td>58%<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>42<\/td><td>100% (induced)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2932\" width=\"578\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-7.png 481w, https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/image-7-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting at week 37, your doctor will measure your cervix for a few predictors of labor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cervical thinness (effacement)<ul><li>Women who were &gt;60% effaced at 37 weeks were 98% likely to go into labor before due date. &lt;40% effaced meant almost none went into labor before due date.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Cervical dilation<\/li><li>Baby drops down in pelvis a few days\/weeks prior to labor<\/li><li>Bishop score &#8211; combines the above into a score from 0 to 13. &gt; 6 is fairly advanced<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop score and cervical effacement are predictive of vaginal deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 42 weeks, you\u2019re almost certain to have labor induced, likely with Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin), which stimulates contractions. This is to reduce the risk of stillbirth with babies who are born too late.
