The baby is exposed to most drugs the mother takes, except for large molecules (e.g. heparin) and drugs that get stuck in the placenta (e.g. buprenorphine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what medicine can pregnant women take, and what should they avoid? Learn the five categories of safety here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Drug safety is hard to test in pregnant mothers because of ethical concerns &#8211; if there is risk of damage, then exposing a fraction of mothers to a drug seems unspeakable. Furthermore, medicine has a traumatic memory from the use of anti-nausea drug thalidomide in the 1950s, leading to thousands of infants with birth defects and thousands of deaths.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, <strong>many drugs that are <\/strong><strong><em>probably<\/em><\/strong><strong> safe for pregnant women don\u2019t get an explicit clearance from the FDA<\/strong>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA classifies drugs into five categories (A B C D X), based on strength of evidence on safety:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medication During Pregnancy: <strong>Category A<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Definition: <\/strong>Well-controlled human studies show no risk to fetus in any trimester.<\/li><li>Examples<ul><li>Folic acid<\/li><li>Levothyroxine (hypothyroidism)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medication During Pregnancy: <strong>Category B<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Definition: <\/strong>No well-controlled human studies and animal studies have shown no risk to a fetus, OR animal studies show risk but well-controlled human studies show no risk.<\/li><li>Includes common substances that are unethical to experiment with by withholding from a control group, like vitamins.<\/li><li>Examples:<ul><li>Macrobid\/nitrofurantoin (antibiotic)<\/li><li>Amoxicillin (antibiotic)<\/li><li>Metformin (diabetes)<\/li><li>Tylenol\/acetaminophen<\/li><li>Claritin<\/li><li>Benadryl<\/li><li>Pepcid AC (heartburn)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medication During Pregnancy: <strong>Category C<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Definition: <\/strong>No well-controlled human studies. Either animal studies have shown problems for the fetus, OR there have been no animal studies.<\/li><li>The broadest category &#8211; includes both drugs that show no problems in small animal and human studies, and drugs that show damage in animal studies.<\/li><li>Examples:<ul><li>Ciprofloxacin (antibiotic)<\/li><li>Gabapentin (epilepsy, nerve pain)<\/li><li>Vicodin\/hydrocodone (pain)<\/li><li>Ambien (insomnia)<\/li><li>Prilosec (heartburn)<\/li><li>Ibuprofen (pain)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medication During Pregnancy: <strong>Category D<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Evidence of harm to fetus in human studies, but benefits may outweigh risks in certain situations.<\/li><li>Once a drug falls in this bucket, it\u2019s hard to get out given how difficult it is to prescribe and get new studies.<\/li><li>Examples:<ul><li>Paxil\/paroxetine (depression)<\/li><li>Lorazepam (anxiety)<\/li><li>Prinivil\/lisinopril (hypertension)<\/li><li>Tetracycline (antibiotic, acne)<\/li><li>Aspirin<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medication During Pregnancy: <strong>Category X<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Definition:<\/strong> Should not be taken during pregnancy under <em>any <\/em>circumstances.<\/li><li>Also includes drugs that have no purpose during pregnancy, like oral contraceptives<\/li><li>Examples:<ul><li>Accutane\/isotretinoin (acne)<\/li><li>Leflunomide (arthritis)<\/li><li>Warfarin (anticoagulant)<\/li><li>Lipitor\/atorvastatin, Zocor\/simvastatin (high cholesterol)<\/li><li>Finasteride (enlarged prostate)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The medications you take while pregnant can affect your baby&#8217;s health.
