This creates inconsistencies and inefficiencies as well as never-ending headaches for you, as the owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast, honing your processes so they run without constant oversight frees you to focus on building your business rather than being mired in its details. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three steps to streamline your business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify your key processes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Document each process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure that everyone follows the processes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/how-to-measure-anything\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>How to Measure Anything<\/em><\/a>, Douglas Hubbard says even simple measurements can dramatically improve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/methods-of-decision-making-crucial-conversations\/\">decision-making<\/a> by reducing uncertainty. When you track weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hub\/professional\/business\/business-performance-metrics\/\">metrics<\/a>, you\u2019re essentially creating what Hubbard calls \u201cconfidence intervals\u201d\u2014probability ranges that tell you where the true value of something likely falls. List the processes on a single sheet of paper and agree on what you will call each one, so there won\u2019t be confusion over what anyone is talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most businesses have processes to handle the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Human relations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marketing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sales<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Operations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accounting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customer service and retention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-document-each-process\"><strong>2) Document Each Process<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The person accountable for each process should document it. Don\u2019t list every detail, just the most important steps, with a few bullet points for procedures under each. Follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/80-20-law\/\">80\/20<\/a> rule: document the 20% of the process that produces 80% of the results. Your goal is to keep your processes simple. As you document steps, you may find redundant or unnecessary steps that you can eliminate. The most effective lead measures have two qualities: They must be predictive (directly affecting your lag measures) and influenceable (something your team can control without depending on outside factors). By including both types of metrics in your weekly tracking spreadsheet, you create a more complete picture of not just your results, but the actions driving those results.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-ensure-everyone-follows-the-processes\"><strong>3) Ensure Everyone Follows the Processes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Compile all of your documentation into a manual, whether printed or digital. Each process should be a chapter. The title should be \u201cThe (your company name) Way.\u201d Train employees in the processes you need them to use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may help to create a visual of your \u201cway\u201d that illustrates how all of the processes work together. The benefits of having documented processes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When everyone follows the same processes, it\u2019s easier for managers to identify and solve problems. Many problems stem from a process breakdown\u2014for example, a customer isn\u2019t billed because a service rep didn\u2019t forward the order to the finance department. You can track the problem to the step that failed and fix it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It positions you to grow the business: with effective processes, you can easily scale up, or increase customers, revenue, and employees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Some experts caution that number-based accountability systems can backfire.
