This is the idea of \u201ccorporate social responsibility.\u201d But corporate social responsibility is at odds with how private firms, especially those with shareholders, should behave in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/free-market-economic-system-2\/\">free-market economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The role of the corporation in a free society is to maximize profits for its shareholders\u2014period. <\/strong>The corporation and its officers (including the CEO) are <em>hired <\/em>by the shareholders to manage the firm\u2019s day-to-day operations and to prioritize profit maximization with every decision they make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, the shareholders are the <em>owners <\/em>of the corporation\u2014expenditures are made with <em>their <\/em>money. Thus, when a CEO or board of directors decides to make a corporate gift, it is doing so with other people\u2019s money. The shareholders did not choose to have their money spent this way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This amounts to unelected corporate leaders imposing an arbitrary tax. The inevitable results of such price ceilings are shortages and the emergence of black markets. With such a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/state-of-chaos\/\">state of chaos<\/a> in the market for core commodities, governments would inevitably face enormous political pressure to step in and manage production and distribution directly.
