The commitments you select will help achieve the lead measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading for how to choose 4DX commitments to support success on your WIGs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Choose 4DX Commitments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the leader, you have two roles at the commitment-choosing stage\u2014you need to choose your own commitments and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-guide-a-team\/\">guide your team<\/a> members in choosing theirs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To come up with 4DX commitments, brainstorm <em>one or two<\/em> specific things that affect the lead measures.<\/strong> Don\u2019t ask yourself what the most important thing you can do that week is, because you\u2019ll come up with something in the whirlwind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 4DX commitments don\u2019t have to address anything urgent. They don\u2019t have to be new ideas\u2014they might be things you\u2019re well aware you should be doing; you only haven\u2019t been able to do them because of the whirlwind. Here are some things to consider when deciding on commitments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Focus. <\/strong>Everyone should choose only one to two commitments.<\/li><li><strong>Importance.<\/strong> Commitments should be high impact and make a big difference<\/li><li><strong>Personal.<\/strong> Commitments are things <em>you<\/em> will do, not things you will commit other people to do. When working with others, commit only to the parts you will be doing yourself.<\/li><li><strong>Timeliness. <\/strong>Commitments must be short enough to be completed within the following week. If a multiweek commitment is necessary, commit only to the parts that you can do in the next week. The week timeline is very important\u2014it creates urgency that can\u2019t be eaten by the whirlwind. Additionally, the commitment must also produce results within a short period of time. If you\u2019re not going to see the impact of the commitment on the lag measure in the near future, it doesn\u2019t fit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/weekly-work-schedule\/\">weekly schedule<\/a>.<ul><li>For example, don\u2019t accept \u201cI\u2019m making progress\u201d as a result in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/wig-session\/\">WIG session<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Effect on the WIG. <\/strong>The 4DX commitments must directly move the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/lead-and-lag-measures\/\">lead and lag measures<\/a>. No whirlwind commitments!<\/li><li><strong>Specificity.<\/strong> It\u2019s hard to be accountable for something vague. Commitments should contain what you\u2019ll do, when you\u2019ll do it, and what the outcome should be.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As the leader, you have an additional source for commitment ideas\u2014the \u201csystem.\u201d <strong>The most effective commitments for leaders tend to be things that improve the <em>team\u2019s <\/em>execution<\/strong> (versus commitments that directly influence the lead measure). Leaders should always consider 4DX commitments around:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Training. <\/strong>You\u2019ll always have a team member who needs training or to be reengaged. When coming up with a commitment to training, be specific: who and what skill<\/li><li><strong>Engagement.<\/strong> Talk to team members about their performance and ways to improve it. They probably have good ideas you can implement, and in addition to the team doing better, the person who came up with the idea feels valued<\/li><li><strong>Recognition and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-lead-by-example\/\">leading by example<\/a>.<\/strong> Figure out who your top performers are and celebrate them in front of their colleagues. Ask your top performers to help the other people on the team.<\/li><li><strong>\u201cClearing the path.\u201d <\/strong>As a leader you should always be offering help.
