How do NASA goals show the first discipline?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA goals have been known for being big, long-term, strategic visions. To accomplish them, NASA has to pursue them with the focused intensity of the first discipline in 4DX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on for more about NASA goals and how they demonstrate the 4DX framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4DX in Action: NASA Goals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of the effectiveness of adhering to Discipline 1:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1958, NASA had seven very important goals along the lines of increasing human knowledge about space, improving spaceships, long-range studies, positioning the US in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/the-space-race\/\">the space race<\/a>, military applications, and cooperation with other nations. Some of these goals were measurable, but none of them had a deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1961, J.F. Kennedy gave NASA a WIG in the correct \u201cfrom point A to point B by deadline\u201d format: put a man on the moon and bring him back before 1970.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were three lower-level \u201cbattle\u201d WIGs to support Kennedy\u2019s \u201cwar\u201d WIG:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Get a spacecraft to the right position on the moon, keeping in mind that the moon is moving in orbit.<\/li><li>Find a way to power rockets carrying heavy lunar modules fast enough to break free of Earth\u2019s gravity.<\/li><li>Develop a capsule and landing gear that would keep a person alive both in transit to and from, and while on, the moon.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When Kennedy announced his WIG, accountability, morale, and engagement at NASA exponentially increased.<\/strong> At the time, NASA didn\u2019t have the technology to achieve any of the three \u201cbattle\u201d WIGs, but they got it done\u2014Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Kennedy was also a good example of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/saying-no\/\">saying no<\/a> to good ideas.
