To be a successful CEO, you need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Leadership skills, especially when it comes to stressed, anxious people<\/li><li>Oration skills. If you struggle to write good speeches, hire speechwriters and take public speaking lessons.<\/li><li>Business acumen<\/li><li>Ability to delegate (the more leaders your agency has, the more powerful it will be)<\/li><li>Ability to attract new clients (if you don\u2019t do this well, your staff will lose faith in you)<\/li><li>Ability to work long hours<\/li><li>Ability to retain morale<\/li><li>Ability to make the workplace fun and safe (people do their best work when they\u2019re comfortable)<\/li><li>Ability to listen<\/li><li>Ability to learn (most agencies represent clients in different fields, and you have to be knowledgeable about all of them)<\/li><li>Ability to take ownership of and recover from mistakes<\/li><li>Availability to travel and entertain<\/li><li>Resilience (popular belief suggests that advertising attracts neurotics\u2014Ogilvy thinks it produces them)<\/li><li>Courage to fire people and make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/making-hard-decisions\/\">hard decisions<\/a><\/li><li>Commitment to the work<\/li><li>Enthusiasm and optimism<\/li><li>Honesty<\/li><li>Charm<\/li><li>Momentum<\/li><li>Self-confidence (you shouldn\u2019t need to feel liked)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, CEOs should visit people in their offices (if you never leave your office and summon people there instead, you\u2019ll turn into a hermit) and meet the needs of their followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Human Resources<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An important part of running an agency is managing the people who work for it. You&#8217;ll need HR if you want to learn how to start an advertising agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hiring<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To run a successful agency, you need talented, trained staff. Look at what they did in college\u2014if they held leadership positions, they\u2019ll probably hold them again.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be cautious of or don\u2019t hire any of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Your friends. <\/strong>If they don\u2019t do their job well, you\u2019ll have to fire them, and your friendship is unlikely to survive.<\/li><li><strong>Your clients.<\/strong> Your clients might be good at their business, but their skills are unlikely to transfer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-start-a-marketing-business\/\">advertising business<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Your clients\u2019 children.<\/strong> If there\u2019s conflict, you might lose the client.<\/li><li><strong>Your children or your partners\u2019 children.<\/strong> Your most ambitious staff will be turned off by the nepotism and leave.<\/li><li><strong>People from other fields.<\/strong> Even if their skills are transferable, they may not have enough of an interest in advertising.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How to start an advertising agency can mean considering your team as a whole:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure you hire at least one person who will stir things up and challenge those who are more conventional.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Don\u2019t use more people power than necessary. If a job can be done by one person, only assign one person to do it.<\/li><li>Hire people with a variety of talents so that your agency can produce different types of advertising. For example, a corporate account can\u2019t be advertised the same way as a power tool company.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Or how to start an advertising agency when hiring partners, executives, or leadership:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Don\u2019t be concerned with formal education\u2014academic achievement and leadership require different motivations.<\/li><li>Consider unorthodox leaders or leaders who don\u2019t fit your culture. The best leaders are unconventional because leadership requires innovation.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t <em>always <\/em>promote from within. Ogilvy had success hiring from outside because when he first started his company, he couldn\u2019t pay well, so he couldn\u2019t attract top talent, and the people he already had wouldn\u2019t have done well in senior positions. Even if you do have strong internal talent, it can be useful to get fresh ideas and an outside perspective in the form of a partner from outside.<\/li><li>Look for the same qualities required in a CEO.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Agency Size<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are advantages and disadvantages to both big and small companies. <strong>Small companies have trouble attracting big accounts because they don\u2019t have the same resources a big company could offer.<\/strong> If small companies do manage to secure a big account, they might become so scared of losing it that they pander instead of offering the impartial judgment clients need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big companies, on the other hand, tend to be more bureaucratic and hierarchical.<\/strong> The staff don\u2019t all know each other, and the company is harder to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Office Politics<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Politics are common in advertising agencies because the atmosphere is so high-pressure.<\/strong> People compete for offices, lunch dates, and promotions, and if the politics get out of hand, they can severely damage the business. For example, the culture at Milton Biow\u2019s agency became so cutthroat he had to shut the agency down. You&#8217;ll need to think about this when learning how to start an ad agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To manage this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fire the worst offenders. Set goals at the beginning of the year and then see how many have been completed by the end.
