The author calls this type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/self-sustaining-business\/\">self-sustaining business<\/a> your \u201cmuse.\u201d Note\u2014you\u2019re not trying to create a business that will make a difference to the world or that you can sell for a lot of money. You\u2019re just trying to build something that makes you money without taking up your time. This Tim Ferriss muse strategy can help you do that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muses must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-sell-a-product\/\">Sell a product<\/a>, whether physical or digital.<\/strong> Other types of businesses, such as customer service or anything that runs on a pay-per-hour system, take up too much time to be muses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be cheap to test.<\/strong> It must cost less than $500 to test the product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lend themselves to automation.<\/strong> You should be able to start stepping away within a month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Require little maintenance.<\/strong> Once the business is running, you shouldn\u2019t have to spend any more than a single day a week managing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three steps to creating an automated muse. <em>Do not manufacture any product until you\u2019ve completed all three steps<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Brainstorm niche markets.<\/strong> Choose a market before a product so that you know there will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-increase-demand-for-a-product\/\">demand for your product<\/a>. Choose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/a-niche-market\/\">a niche market<\/a> specifically because there will be less competition and it\u2019ll be less expensive to advertise. There must be a magazine that serves that market (for advertising in) and you must be part of the market (that way you\u2019ll know what the market wants).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, if you\u2019re an athlete, you might choose martial artists as your market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Brainstorm products.<\/strong> Come up with possible products that would serve the niche markets you brainstormed above. The best option is to sell an information product that you create yourself (you don\u2019t have to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/becoming-an-expert\/\">be an expert<\/a>, you just have to know more about the subject than your customers). Information products are ideal because they\u2019re cheap and fast to create, can have a large markup, and are hard to copy or knockoff.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, you might sell a DVD of a martial arts workout. Once you\u2019ve filmed the workout, it\u2019s cheap to make copies of the DVD.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Test your product ideas. <\/strong>Study your competition so you can find a way to make your product different and then create an ad that highlights why yours is different. Then, start advertising and \u201cselling\u201d your product. (Since you don\u2019t actually have products yet, you\u2019re not going to be able to sell anything; you\u2019re just going to set up sales infrastructure to see how many people are interested. As long as you don\u2019t collect billing information, this is legal.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, perhaps many martial arts workout DVDs exist, but yours is the only one that includes specific exercises for increasing the power of your sidekick. Your ad will talk about sidekicks, and you could offer the product on an eBay auction to gauge interest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After testing, calculate if your muse product was profitable by comparing how much you spent on advertising to how much money you made \u201cselling\u201d your products. If it wasn\u2019t profitable, revise your product, ad, or guarantee to improve sales and then test again. Or try a new product.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tim-ferriss-the-muse-s-image-matters\"><strong>Tim Ferriss: The Muse\u2019s Image<\/strong> Matters <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many large companies don\u2019t want to partner with small ones. To improve your company\u2019s image:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Demote yourself.<\/strong> When you contact the company, give yourself a mid-level <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/job-titles\/\">job title<\/a>. This has two benefits:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the company owner or CEO is getting in touch, that implies that the company is a start-up because the owner has to do everything herself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s easier to negotiate if you\u2019re not the final word on the decision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Update your contact page on your website.<\/strong> Create different emails or phone numbers for different departments. Initially, they\u2019ll all forward to you, but once you have outsourcers, you can forward them elsewhere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use Interactive Voice Response (IVR).<\/strong> IVR is a phone response that greets callers with a pre-recorded message and asks them to say or select options in order to direct them to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hiring-the-right-people\/\">right person<\/a>. Again, forward everything to yourself initially.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get a PO Box instead of using your personal address.<\/strong> When you put the address on your website, instead of writing it as \u201cPO Box ###, City\u201d write it as \u201cSuite ###, [street address of the post office].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-filter-your-customers\"><strong>Filter Your Customers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve reached Phase #3, you can start being choosy about your customers. At its simplest, customer service is to sell a customer good, reasonably priced product and solve any ordering problems quickly. <strong>Ideal customers are trading partners, not people you have to cater to. <\/strong>Demanding, unreasonable customers take up time and energy, and the best way to avoid them is to head them off before they even order. Remember the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/80-20-law\/\">80\/20<\/a> rule. Losing an annoying customer likely has a negligible effect on your bottom line. (You can also always send them to a reseller so you don\u2019t have to deal with them yourself.)&nbsp;This is all part of the Tim Ferriss Muse strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To filter your customers and cut down on customers contacting you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t let anyone pay by check, money order, or Western Union. These payment methods always cause problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never offer free products. If you want to do a promotion or collect contact information, offer cheap products instead. Free things attract people who will waste your time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t offer free trials, offer a lose-win guarantee. A lose-win guarantee gives the customer something in addition to their money back if they don\u2019t like the product or service. If your product is good, this isn\u2019t a big risk. Most people won\u2019t try to scam you. Returns will cost you, but you\u2019ll probably get so many sales it\u2019ll be worth it.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, if your pizza from Domino\u2019s isn\u2019t delivered within half an hour, it\u2019s free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t accept orders from countries known for mail fraud.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When dealing with resellers:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create a wholesale minimum order of 12-100 units and don\u2019t let anyone who doesn\u2019t have a tax ID number order. This ensures you\u2019re only working with serious businesspeople.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Send everyone to an online order form that needs to be printed and returned by fax.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t negotiate pricing or give high-volume discounts.
