Carnegie\u2019s first principle is that <strong>people want to feel important.<\/strong> This desire drives much of human behavior. By appealing to this desire, you can influence how others feel about you\u2014if you make them feel important, they\u2019ll think well of you; if you diminish their sense of importance, they\u2019ll dislike you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Some experts classify the desire for importance as a <em>need<\/em> instead of a want. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/six-minute-x-ray\/1-page-summary\"><em>Six-Minute X-Ray<\/em><\/a>, Chase Hughes lists the need for importance as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/six-minute-x-ray\/1-page-summary\" rel=\"nofollow\">one of six social needs that many people have<\/a>. As you interact with others, keep asking yourself: \u201cWhat is it that this person wants?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: It can be difficult to appeal to others\u2019 interests when you\u2019re just getting to know them because conversation between new or casual acquaintances tends to be superficial and can feel awkward. However, research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2021\/09\/deep-conversations-strangers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we tend to overestimate how awkward conversations with new people will be<\/a>. This may be because we <em>underestimate<\/em> how interested they\u2019ll be in our lives. To bring more depth to conversations with new people and decrease any awkwardness, show an overt interest in their lives by going beyond small talk and asking deep, meaningful questions.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>Everyone has something they can teach you,<\/strong> and you benefit by figuring out what that is. This belief leads to a genuine interest and appreciation for other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. <strong>Angry people are often angry because they feel unheard.<\/strong> Once you sympathize with them, they will soften their anger substantially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. To influence people to do things, <strong>praise and appreciation are more effective than orders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-checklist-for-arguments\"><strong>Checklist for Arguments<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know the principles, take a look at this checklist for arguments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Control your temper. <\/strong>You can measure the size of a person by what makes her angry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead, approach with an open-minded view: \u201c<strong>I may be wrong. I frequently am. And if I\u2019m wrong, I want to be put right. <\/strong>Let\u2019s examine the facts.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Praise the other person for a trait that will help resolve the argument (e.g., their patience, open-mindedness, fairness, and receptivity to new facts).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understand that the other person has a valid view of the situation. This neutralizes any future sting of feedback.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When introducing a point of feedback, start by praising other <strong>specific things <\/strong>that were done well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduce the point of improvement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Talk about your own related mistakes, suggesting you know how difficult the task can be.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ask questions instead of giving orders<\/strong>. What do you think about this? Do you think that would work?
