Habits form like pearls in oysters. It starts as a tiny irritant, like a piece of sand, triggering continuous layering of coats to produce a pearl (a fully formed habit).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is an <strong>External Trigger<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>External <\/em><\/strong><strong>triggers are delivered through the environment<\/strong>. They contain information on what the user should do next, like app notifications prompting users to return to see a photo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Types of external triggers include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Paid triggers like advertising and marketing<ul><li>Habit-forming companies tend not to rely on paid triggers since paying for reengagement is often financially unsustainable.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Earned triggers like PR, app store placements<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/psychology-of-feedback\/\">Relationship triggers<\/a> like word-of-mouth and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/social-signaling\/\">social signals<\/a><ul><li>Paypal\u2019s message about \u201cmoney waiting for you\u201d was irresistible<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Owned triggers &#8211; the user consents for the product to occupy her attention space<ul><li>App notifications on the phone, email newsletters<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is an <strong>Internal Trigger<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, as a product becomes associated with a thought, emotion, or preexisting routine, users return based on <strong>internal triggers<\/strong>. <strong>Emotions <\/strong>&#8211; especially negative ones like boredom, loneliness, confusion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/find-purpose-in-your-life\/\">lack of purpose<\/a>, and indecisiveness &#8211; are powerful internal triggers. These behavior triggers may be short and minor, possibly even subconscious.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Loneliness triggers Facebook to provide social \u201cconnection\u201d<\/li><li>Boredom prompts finding novel content on Youtube or Buzzfeed<\/li><li>Lack of purpose, or the feeling that no one needs us, prompts email checking<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When triggered, we often execute a mindless action to ease the negative sensation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Create an Internal or External Trigger<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about your user\u2019s pain points to create the best product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Write 3 internal triggers that could remind your user to take action with your product. Write them this way: \u201cevery time the user [internal trigger], she [first action]\u201d<\/li><li>What is the user doing right before using your product?<\/li><li>Given this, what are the best places and times to send an external trigger?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Think of 3 external triggers you could use.
