Nudges can help push you in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why nudge? Read on for some exercises to help you understand the need and impact of nudges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Nudge? <strong>Exploring Your Biases<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-diagnose your cognitive blind spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Think about a recent decision you made and analyze it using your own words. Was it a good or bad decision? Why or why not?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Analyze the same decision using Thaler and Sunstein\u2019s categories. Did you \u201cgo with your gut\u201d or think rationally and deliberately about the choices you had (Automatic System vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/reflective-system\/\">Reflective System<\/a>)? Did you choose the safer option to avoid a loss (Loss Aversion) or maintain the status quo (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/status-quo-bias\/\">status quo bias<\/a>), or did you choose the riskier option because you were overly confident (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/unrealistic-optimism\/\">Unrealistic Optimism<\/a>)?<\/li><li>Now consider a decision you\u2019ll have to make in the near future. Write down what the choices are, and which choice you\u2019re leaning toward.<\/li><li>Explore how you came to the decision just above. Were you swayed by any of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/cognitive-heuristics\/\">cognitive biases<\/a> Thaler and Sunstein describe? Which ones did you feel most strongly? If not, how did you avoid them?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Impressionable Are You?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Analyze how social influence colors your decisions. Why nudge in these situations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What was the last major purchase you made?<\/li><li>Why did you make this purchase? How did you come to this decision?<\/li><li>Revisit your answer just above. Did social influence play a part? If so, how? What were all the influences you received that could have nudged you toward making this purchase? (Think about cues from other people, and any messaging from advertising or news reports.)<\/li><li>At the time, how confident were you that you made the decision independently, without outside influence? On reflection, do you still feel this way?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal Opinions: <strong>Why Nudge?<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Think through Thaler and Sunstein\u2019s nudges and freedoms on hot topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you think patients should be allowed to waive their rights to sue for medical malpractice? Why or why not? Would <em>you <\/em>waive your rights to sue for a discount?<\/li><li>Do you think states should get out of the marriage business? Why or why not? If you\u2019re married, would you be comfortable with a state civil union rather than a marriage?
