Junior and Rowdy are lifelong best friends. Over the course of the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian<\/em>, their friendship struggles, and they eventually reconcile, even though Junior knows their paths in life will be different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rowdy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Rowdy is Junior\u2019s best (human) friend. (Junior\u2019s best<\/em> friend is his dog, Oscar.) Junior considers Rowdy to be the \u201cmost important person in [his] life,\u201d even more important than the members of his own family. Rowdy and Junior were born on the same day in the same hospital, and they\u2019ve been friends ever since. Junior and Rowdy’s friendship is one of the things that has helped Junior survive all these years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rowdy is the toughest kid on the reservation. He\u2019ll fight anyone\u2014girl or boy, child or adult, human or dog. He even throws punches at the rain. He got into his first fist fight when he was in kindergarten: A first-grader had thrown a piece of ice during a snowball fight, which made Rowdy mad. He punched the first-grader and two of the first-grader\u2019s friends, and then he punched the teacher who tried to stop the fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rowdy\u2019s father is a mean drunk who beats him and Rowdy\u2019s mother, so they both always have bruised and bloody faces. Rowdy spends most of his time at Junior\u2019s house because it\u2019s a \u201csafe place.\u201d Rowdy loves comic books, and not the \u201ccool\u201d ones. He likes things like Casper the Friendly Ghost<\/em>, comics meant for younger kids. These are perfect for Rowdy because he has a juvenile sense of humor and he struggles to read on grade level. When Rowdy reads, his tough-guy persona disappears and he becomes childlike, laughing<\/a> at all the dumb jokes. As does Junior, Rowdy pretends he lives inside these fictional worlds\u2014they\u2019re far better places to live than his real life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saying Goodbye<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The next day, Junior walks to his old school to tell Rowdy that he\u2019s switching schools. Rowdy is alone on the playground because all the other kids are afraid of him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior wants to tell Rowdy that he loves him, but he knows that boys aren\u2019t supposed to say those kinds of things to each other and also that Rowdy would hate it, so he gets straight to the point and tells him that he\u2019s transferring to Reardan. Then, Junior and Rowdy’s friendship begins to crumble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, Rowdy thinks Junior is joking, and he doesn\u2019t think it\u2019s funny. When Rowdy realizes Junior is serious, he mocks him and says he\u2019ll never go because he\u2019s too much of a \u201cwuss.\u201d Although Junior knows Rowdy well and, therefore, should know better, Junior makes two critical mistakes at this moment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mistake #1:<\/strong> When Rowdy turns away, upset that Junior is leaving, Junior touches Rowdy\u2019s shoulder. Rowdy shoves him and calls him a \u201cretarded fag.\u201d This makes Junior cry. Then, to Junior\u2019s surprise, Rowdy starts to cry, too. The fact that he\u2019s crying makes Rowdy so mad that he starts screaming at Junior, accusing Junior of always thinking he\u2019s better than Rowdy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mistake #2:<\/strong> Junior tries to explain that he doesn\u2019t think he\u2019s better than anyone and touches Rowdy again<\/em>. In response, Rowdy punches him. At that moment, Junior knows that his best friend is now his worst enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior Seeks an Old Friend and Makes a New One<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Rowdy usually spends part of Thanksgiving at Junior\u2019s house, but he and Junior still aren\u2019t speaking, and Junior misses him, so he draws a cartoon of the two of them as superheroes. He walks to Rowdy\u2019s house to give him the cartoon and Rowdy\u2019s drunk father opens the door. When Junior hands the dad his cartoon to give to Rowdy, the father looks at the cartoon and says, \u201cYou\u2019re kind of gay, aren\u2019t you?\u201d He agrees to give Rowdy the cartoon, even though it\u2019s \u201ca little gay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moments later, Junior looks up at Rowdy\u2019s bedroom window and sees him holding the cartoon. When Junior waves, Rowdy gives him the finger, but Rowdy doesn\u2019t rip up the cartoon, which gives Junior hope that maybe Rowdy still respects him, or at least his art, a little. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeking Advice<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Junior doesn\u2019t know how to deal with his feelings for Penelope, so he emails Rowdy, even though he doesn\u2019t expect to hear back. To Junior, Rowdy\u2019s still his best friend, even though Rowdy hates him. Junior tells Rowdy he\u2019s in love with a girl who\u2019s white and doesn\u2019t know what to do. Rowdy responds a few minutes later, telling Junior he\u2019s just another Indian \u201ctreating white women like bowling trophies.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Opening Play<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The players take their positions, and Rowdy laughs when he sees that Junior\u2019s guarding him. The game has just started when Rowdy steals the ball. Junior knows Rowdy well, and he knows what Rowdy\u2019s intending to do: Rowdy plans to dunk the ball, a dramatic opening move meant to embarrass Reardan in the first play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior chases Rowdy down the court and does some quick calculating: Rowdy will probably start his jump 5 feet away from the basket; Rowdy can jump 2 feet higher than Junior can. So Junior makes the split-second decision to jump first. He and Rowdy rise together toward the basket, but, as if by magic, Junior starts to rise higher than Rowdy. It\u2019s the first time in his life that he\u2019s outjumped Rowdy. Mid-air, Junior steals the ball from Rowdy\u2019s hands and observes the look of complete shock on Rowdy\u2019s face.<\/strong> No one<\/em> in high school basketball makes plays like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior lands with the ball and runs to the opposite end of the court, with Rowdy screaming behind him. Junior halts abruptly at the three-point line and head-fakes. Surprisingly, Rowdy falls for it, jumping in front of Junior as Junior patiently waits for him to pass. They make eye contact while Rowdy\u2019s in the air, and Rowdy knows he\u2019s made a stupid mistake<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior has time to stick his tongue out at Rowdy before swishing a three-pointer. Junior\u2019s teammates, coach, and parents are ecstatic. In that moment, everyone knows that the game is already won.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior and Rowdy<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After the school year ends, Junior\u2019s at home watching TV when there\u2019s a knock on the door and  Rowdy enters. Junior, surprised to see him, says, \u201cI thought you hated me.\u201d Rowdy acknowledges that he does, but that he\u2019s also bored. He asks if Junior wants to shoot some hoops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After shooting in comfortable silence for a little while, Junior tells Rowdy he should go to Reardan with him in the fall. Rowdy responds by saying he was reading a book about how \u201cold-time\u201d Indians used to be nomadic. Rowdy thinks that Junior is the only true nomad on the reservation<\/strong>, and that\u2019s pretty cool. This makes Junior cry. Rowdy, dry-eyed, is unperturbed. He just tells Junior to make sure to send him postcards as he travels the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Junior knows that what Rowdy says is true: he\u2019s a nomad. Junior hopes that, someday, his tribe will forgive him for leaving, and that, someday, he\u2019ll forgive himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
