The northern lights (also called the aurora borealis) and their counterpart\u2014the aurora australis\u2014are typically visible only from the Earth\u2019s polar regions. The unusual sightings occurred because the sun is approaching \u201csolar maximum\u201d: the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity. Halfway through solar maximum, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-magnetic-field-flip-solar-maximum-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polarity of the sun\u2019s magnetic field<\/a> reverses. As this reversal gets closer, the sun\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/scied.ucar.edu\/video\/sun-magnetic-field-rotate-tangle-movie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">magnetic field becomes twisted and tangled<\/a>, which creates localized magnetic fields. These cause the sun to emit solar flares\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/solar-flares-effects-classification-formation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bursts of electromagnetic radiation<\/a>, including visible light, that explode from its surface when magnetic energy is released\u2014and coronal mass ejections (CMEs)\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clouds of magnetized plasma<\/a> that erupt from its atmosphere and can <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/sun\/is-a-solar-flare-the-same-thing-as-a-cme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expand to millions of miles across<\/a> as they travel across space and collide with the magnetic fields of planets such as Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both solar flares and CMEs occur when the sun\u2019s magnetic field twists, tangles, and explosively realigns itself, a process that drives huge amounts of energy into space. But the kind of energy that each one propels into space is very different. While a solar flare sends light into space, a CME sends solar matter speeding away from the sun, and these high-energy particles sometimes travel toward Earth. If the magnetic field of a CME isn\u2019t aligned with Earth\u2019s, it can disrupt our planet\u2019s magnetic field and create currents that drive the solar particles toward the poles of the Earth. When these particles collide with oxygen and nitrogen in the Earth\u2019s atmosphere, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/science\/24156730\/aurora-northern-lights-visible-space-weather-storm-sun-solar-flare-ejection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">excite the gases in the atmosphere<\/a> and cause them to glow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>The Importance of Earth\u2019s Magnetic Field<\/strong><br><br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-invisible-rainbow\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Invisible Rainbow<\/em><\/a>, Arthur Firstenberg explains how Earth&#8217;s electromagnetic fields are crucial for life, forming a global network from the ground to the ionosphere.
