Is there any proof that Jesus was in fact a divine being?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>The Case for Christ<\/em>, Lee Strobel decides to find out the answer to the question &#8220;was Jesus divine?&#8221; He&#8217;s not the first one to ask this question. In his research, Strobel uncovered evidence that helped answer the question &#8220;how was Jesus divine?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how was Jesus divine? Keep reading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Was Jesus Divine? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s an important question in Christianity: was Jesus divine? Whereas the God of the Old Testament is omni-everything, Jesus appears limited in all sorts of ways: he can\u2019t exist in two places at once, he admits that he doesn\u2019t know when he\u2019ll return to Earth, and he\u2019s unable to perform miracles in his hometown (there goes omnipresence, omniscience, and omnipotence). <strong>The case against Jesus\u2019s deity, at least how deity is understood in the Old Testament, seems closed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, theologians throughout the years have been able to explain these \u201ccontradictions\u201d using a variety of approaches. Two of the most prominent approaches to the question &#8220;was Jesus human or divine?&#8221; are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>A Jesus of Two Minds<\/em>&nbsp;<ul><li>Theologian Benjamin Warfield, who was active in the late 19th century, theorized that Jesus was<strong> both distinctly divine and distinctly human<\/strong>. In other words, when Jesus does something that seems to undermine his deity\u2014for example, confesses he doesn\u2019t know when he\u2019ll return\u2014he\u2019s evincing his humanity. When he performs an unprecedented miracle\u2014for example, raising others from the dead or rising himself\u2014he\u2019s acting as God.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>&nbsp;<em>An \u201cEmptied\u201d Jesus<\/em><ul><li>This solution grows out of Philippians 2, which finds Paul telling the reader that, because Jesus didn\u2019t want to \u201cexploit\u201d his equality with God, he \u201cemptied\u201d himself. There have been various interpretations of what Paul meant here, the most compelling of which is that Jesus relinquished the <em>independent <\/em>use of his divine powers. That is, while incarnated, Jesus only acted as God when God the Father commanded it.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For Carson\u2019s part, though, the quest for an exhaustive explanation <strong>misses the point<\/strong>. Incarnation\u2014the event of spirit becoming flesh\u2014is a miraculous process that can\u2019t help but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-be-mysterious\/\">be mysterious<\/a>. <strong>It is an act of God<\/strong>, and so it should come as no surprise that mortals have difficulty comprehending it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless,<strong> there is clear textual evidence that Jesus satisfied all five of the key attributes of God:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Jesus <em>is <\/em>omnipresent (in Matthew 28:20, he says \u201cand lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world\u201d).<\/li><li>Jesus <em>is <\/em>omniscient<em> <\/em>(in John 16:30, the author admits, \u201cNow are we sure that thou knowest all things\u201d).<\/li><li>Jesus <em>is <\/em>omnipotent (Matthew 28:18: \u201cAll power is given unto me in heaven and in earth,\u201d Jesus says).<\/li><li>Jesus <em>is <\/em>eternal (John 1:1: \u201cIn the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the World was God\u201d).<\/li><li>Jesus <em>is <\/em>immutable (from Hebrews 13:8: \u201cJesus Christ the same today and yesterday and forever\u201d).<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>To Forgive Is Divine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Forgiveness is another element of the question &#8220;was Jesus human or divine?&#8221; For most Christians, Jesus\u2019s miracles are the core piece of evidence for his deity. However, New Testament scholars concede that<strong> figures other than Jesus were able to perform miracles<\/strong>. So what sets Jesus apart?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One less-remarked-upon trait of Jesus that indicates his deity is his <em>forgiveness of sin<\/em>. In the Jewish tradition, when men sinned, they sinned against God and subsequently had to beg his forgiveness. <strong>Jesus\u2019s ability to forgive sin Himself indicates his deity, for God alone can forgive sin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And not only was Jesus able to forgive sin:<strong> He was utterly without sin himself<\/strong>. Other than God, no being is morally perfect, and so, therefore, Jesus is God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Question of Jesus\u2019s Createdness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most definitive sign of God\u2019s divinity, arguably, is the fact that He is the creator of all things. But in a number of places in the New Testament, Jesus is portrayed as having been <em>created<\/em>\u2014for example in John 3:16 and Colossians 1:15. Does this mean Jesus isn\u2019t truly God?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The notion that Jesus was created stems from flawed translations of the original New Testament Greek. In John 3:16 for example, when the author calls Jesus the \u201cbegotten\u201d Son of God (King James Version), the Greek word typically translated \u201cbegotten\u201d actually means something closer to \u201cunique and beloved.\u201d <strong>That is to say, the original Greek doesn\u2019t have the connotation of \u201ccreated.\u201d <\/strong>(More modern translations use \u201cone and only Son\u201d in lieu of \u201cbegotten.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Was Jesus a Divine Secondary God?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At certain points in the New Testament, Jesus seems to diminish his own primacy. For example, in John 14:28, Jesus tells his disciples that the \u201cFather is greater than I,\u201d implying that Jesus\u2019s deity isn\u2019t foremost. So was Jesus divine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas many misreadings of Jesus\u2019s pronouncements have their origin in poor translation, <strong>others stem from the omission of necessary context<\/strong>. In the case of John 14:28, Jesus is preparing his disciples for his ascension to Heaven, and the lines <em>before <\/em>the above-quoted phrase fill out Jesus\u2019s meaning: \u201cIf you loved me, you\u2019d be glad for my sake [that I\u2019m going away], because the Father is greater than I.\u201d In other words, Jesus, as the mortal incarnation of God (the Son of God), is simply saying that God the Father is in a <em>better place <\/em>than Jesus is currently. That Jesus says \u201cthe father is greater than I\u201d isn\u2019t a denial of his deity; it\u2019s a comparison between equal beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So was Jesus divine?
