What kind of impact do you want to leave on the world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In simple terms, Jeffrey Pfeffer says that power<em> <\/em>is the ability to control the world around you<strong>.<\/strong> Having power means being able to<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-influence-others\/\">influence others<\/a>, distribute resources as you see fit, make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/important-decisions-in-life\/\">important decisions<\/a>, and ultimately get what you want.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/why-power\/\">why power<\/a> is necessary to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-be-your-best-self\/\">become your best self<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/hub\/society-culture\/how-to-make-the-world-a-better-place\/\">make the world a better place<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-power-is-and-why-you-need-it\"><strong>What Power Is and Why You Need It<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In discussing the importance of power, Pfeffer is using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/power-political-and-social-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sociological definition of power<\/a>, which simply means the ability to influence the lives of others. People can exercise their power in various ways. For instance, a manager or elected leader usually exerts power through authority, while an influencer or pundit might use manipulation, and a despot or an abusive partner often uses force.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds that, while power can help you achieve your personal goals, it\u2019s also key to improving and prolonging your life. This is because<strong> having a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/an-internal-locus-of-control\/\">sense of control<\/a> over your surroundings makes you healthier and happier.<\/strong> Conversely, a lack of control over your environment makes you feel vulnerable and anxious. That constant feeling of stress, in turn, harms you both physically and mentally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Happiness being linked to a sense of control is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-self-determination-theory-2795387\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Self-Determination Theory (SDT)<\/a> in psychology. SDT says that people have three innate psychological needs: <em>autonomy <\/em>(the ability to make their own decisions and take meaningful action), <em>competence <\/em>(the skills to achieve their goals), and <em>relatedness <\/em>(connections with other people). Power satisfies the needs for autonomy and competence. In other words, a powerful person is someone who has a sense of control over their own life and who feels capable of getting what they want. On the other hand, a powerless person\u2014someone who isn\u2019t meeting those needs\u2014will experience <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/conditions\/stress-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chronic stress<\/a>, which can cause health problems ranging from clinical anxiety and addiction to high blood pressure and heart disease.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another reason you should seek power is that you need it to have a significant impact on the world. Whether you want to reform the political system, raise money for a worthy cause, or fight injustice, <strong>you need influence and control\u2014without power, you\u2019ll never be able to accomplish more than you can do on your own.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, suppose you want to support a particular charity. If you have little or no power, you can only contribute as much money as you\u2019re willing to give. However, if you\u2019re an influential figure at your workplace or in your local community, then you can encourage others to add their own donations. By doing so, you could multiply your impact many times over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Leadership expert Ren\u00e9 Rodriguez (<a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/amplify-your-influence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Amplify Your Influence<\/em><\/a>) says there are <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/amplify-your-influence#four-rhetorical-appeals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four basic strategies<\/a> people use to get others to support their causes. <em>Pathos <\/em>means appealing to people\u2019s emotions, often by making them feel personally affected by the issue you\u2019re discussing. <em>Ethos <\/em>means flaunting your expertise on the subject in order to appear trustworthy. <em>Logos <\/em>means using facts and data to logically convince people that you\u2019re correct. Finally, <em>kairos <\/em>means making your ideas relevant to your audience\u2014for instance, someone who just moved into a bad neighborhood may feel unsafe and want protection for themselves and their neighbors. Therefore, that would be a good person to try bringing into a neighborhood watch organization.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-need-power-because-the-world-is-not-fair\"><strong>You Need Power Because the World Is Not Fair<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pfeffer adds that many people don\u2019t seek out power (or actively avoid it) because they think that the world is an essentially fair place.<strong> <\/strong>Therefore, they believe that if they live well\u2014such as by working hard, following the rules, and perhaps doing a good deed from time to time\u2014then they\u2019ll be rewarded with safety and prosperity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>However, Pfeffer says this is a myth\u2014the world is actually brutal and unfair.<\/strong> People don\u2019t get what they deserve; they only get what they can take for themselves, or what more powerful people force upon them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What&#8217;s the importance of power?
