Here are four tips from popular authors to help you find and pursue a new direction in the new year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-face-your-fears\"><strong>1: Face Your Fears<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/accepting-change-in-life\/\">Embracing change<\/a> starts with facing your fears\u2014as screenwriter and producer Shonda Rhimes did when she realized she\u2019d been passing up opportunities because she\u2019d been afraid of failure. Sincero recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/shortform.com\/app\/book\/you-are-a-badass\/chapter-8#tips-on-finding-your-true-calling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">several techniques for figuring out your purpose<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Imagine you\u2019re an alien<\/strong> suddenly inhabiting your body, so that everything is new. Ask yourself, who is this person I\u2019ve inhabited? What do they have fun doing? What are they awesome at? What are you going to do with this incredible new life you\u2019ve stepped into? This can make you aware of possibilities and resources you may take for granted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dive in and do something\u2014anything.<\/strong> Don\u2019t waste time figuring out the perfect next move; just start with one thing that feels right and keep heading in that direction.<strong> <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watch what other people are doing<\/strong>. You don\u2019t have to invent your life from scratch. Look around and see whose life makes you jealous. Identify the specifics you like about their life. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-turn-your-resolutions-into-habits\"><strong>3:<\/strong> Turn Your Resolutions Into Habits<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-overcome-your-fears\/\">overcome your fears<\/a> and follow your calling, you\u2019ll have to adopt new habits. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/atomic-habits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Atomic Habits<\/em><\/a>, James Clear advises that you make a specific and measurable plan to implement new behaviors\u2014which he calls an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/atomic-habits\/part-ii#implementation-intention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>implementation intention<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two most important cues for your plan are <em>time<\/em> and <em>place<\/em>, so when scheduling your resolutions, be as specific as possible: Instead of saying, \u201cI\u2019ll exercise every day,\u201d say, \u201cI\u2019ll walk for 20 minutes around my office building at 2 p.m. every day.\u201d This removes the need for inspiration or motivation to kick in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-kick-a-bad-habit\">How to Kick a Bad Habit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-compound-effect\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Compound Effect<\/a>, <\/em>Darren Hardy says there are five strategies to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-bad-habits\/\">get rid of bad habits<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Know your triggers<\/strong>. What situations trigger bad habits? (Do you drink too much with a certain group of friends? Do you crave chocolate at a certain time of day?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get rid of it<\/strong>. Throw out the objects enabling your bad habits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Find replacements<\/strong>. Find something healthy that can replace the bad habit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Take it easy<\/strong>. You don\u2019t have to go cold turkey. Since they are so entrenched, you may need to take small steps toward unwinding your bad habits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Or don\u2019t take it easy<\/strong>. While it\u2019s probably the exception and not the rule, some people actually do better changing a lot of bad habits at once.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-chunk-the-year-and-chunk-your-goals\"><strong>4. Chunk the Year and Chunk Your Goals<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-12-week-year\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The 12 Week Year<\/em><\/a>, Brian Morgan and Michael Lennington write that most people create goals based on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/annual-goal\/\">annual plan<\/a> of attack: They give themselves until December to achieve resolutions set in January. This mindset, however, encourages you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-12-week-year\/1-page-summary#annualization-versus-periodization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">procrastinate<\/a> until the December deadline comes into focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, the authors argue that you should think of the year as a series of 12-week bursts, and then divide your goals into steps you can accomplish in each of these shorter periods. When you focus for just 12 weeks on one aspect of your annualized plan, your deadline is always in sight, which helps you push past your productivity limits and motivates you to achieve more immediate results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tips-on-keeping-resolutions\">Tips on Keeping Resolutions:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In her book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/girl-wash-your-face\/preview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Girl, Wash Your Face<\/a>, <\/em>Rachel Hollis provides advice on keeping promises to yourself. She writes that when you commit to keeping every resolution you make to yourself, these strategies will help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Start with one small goal.<\/strong>&nbsp;Don\u2019t overwhelm yourself with a big general goal, such as starting a diet. Rather, start by adding a new, good habit, such as drinking water. When you achieve that for a month or so, you set a higher standard and can add on something together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Slow down your commitments<\/strong>. Only commit to things you know you can finish because they\u2019re important to you. Otherwise you set yourself up for failure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be honest with yourself<\/strong>. When you blow something off, acknowledge what you\u2019re doing.
