You could also think of eustress as pressure or motivation; whichever term you prefer, it\u2019s an external force that pushes you to do your best work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that \u201cwork\u201d in this context doesn\u2019t just mean your job. Instead, Hardy suggests<strong> keeping eustress front-of-mind for anything that takes effort, such as fitness goals and creative projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Eustress Is Distress Minus Danger<\/strong><br><br>The difference between eustress and distress is a sense of danger\u2014when you feel challenged, but not threatened, you experience eustress. However, it\u2019s important to note that your brain can\u2019t tell the difference between emotional danger (such as rejection or shame) and physical danger; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/nicolefisher\/2020\/02\/14\/emotional--physical-pain-are-almost-the-sameto-your-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it experiences both as simply \u201cdanger.\u201d<\/a> Therefore, when designing your work environment, protect yourself from both kinds of danger to make sure you\u2019re creating eustress.<br><br>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-upside-of-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Upside of Stress<\/em><\/a>, psychologist Kelly McGonigal says that positive stress triggers the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-upside-of-stress#a-new-understanding-of-stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">challenge response<\/a>. This is important because those responses to danger put you under a lot of physical and mental strain, leading to numerous health problems in the long run. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/long-term-stress\/\">chronic stress<\/a> (the bad kind) is linked to issues ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/stress-symptoms\/art-20050987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">muscle pain and stomach upset to insomnia, anxiety, and addiction<\/a>.<br><br>In short, eustress provides all the productivity benefits of distress, but without the harmful side effects.\u00a0<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-ways-to-create-eustress\">3 Ways to Create Eustress<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardy\u2019s tips for creating eustress fall into three categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Challenging yourself. <\/strong>One of the most effective ways to create eustress is to set difficult goals because you\u2019ll be motivated to work harder to reach those goals. This often means that the goal itself is ambitious, like doubling your income by the end of next year. However, it could also mean setting a goal that\u2019s difficult for you personally, such as overcoming an injury or giving your house a top-to-bottom cleaning (if cleaning is something you struggle with).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-10x-rule\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The 10X Rule<\/em><\/a>, entrepreneur and sales coach Grant Cardone offers a way to make sure you\u2019re setting appropriately challenging goals for yourself: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-10x-rule\/1-page-summary#the-10x-solution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Set a reasonable goal, then multiply it by 10<\/a>. Trying new things. <\/strong>New experiences are powerful motivators. This is because when you\u2019re trying something for the first time, you\u2019re forced to focus completely and work much harder than usual to make sure you\u2019re doing it correctly. This principle also applies to learning new information: You have to stay engaged in order to understand and retain what you\u2019ve learned. Therefore, whenever it\u2019s feasible, take opportunities to experience new things\u2014for example, you might take on a new responsibility at work, or find a podcast that teaches you about a topic you\u2019re interested in. Note that this category of eustress will have some overlap with the first category (challenge) because it\u2019s often difficult to do something you\u2019ve never done before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Shortform note: Trying new things is so motivating because of a chemical in your brain called <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/22581-dopamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dopamine<\/a>. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-molecule-of-more\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Molecule of More<\/em><\/a>, psychiatrist Daniel Lieberman explains that your brain releases dopamine when you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/the-molecule-of-more\/1-page-summary#dopamine-the-what-if-chemical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">encounter something new<\/a>, whether it\u2019s new information or a new situation. That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/dopamine-high\/\">dopamine rush<\/a> is highly pleasurable, which is why it\u2019s so motivating\u2014you <em>want <\/em>to learn new things and have new experiences because you know that doing so makes you feel good.)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Creating consequences for failure. <\/strong>Challenging goals can be motivational, but they can also be disheartening. Therefore, to keep yourself on track, make sure that there will be consequences for you if you fall short. One way to do this is by investing your own resources into a project, meaning that you\u2019ll suffer a loss if the project fails\u2014for example, if you sign up for guitar lessons and then don\u2019t go to them, you\u2019ll have wasted your money. Another approach is to create <em>social <\/em>consequences by publicly announcing your goals to your friends and family, or anyone whose opinion you value. Since you won\u2019t want to disappoint those people or be publicly embarrassed by failing at what you promised to do, you\u2019ll work harder to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/reach-your-goals-2\/\">reach your goals<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>The Benefits of Having \u201cSkin in the Game\u201d<\/strong><br><br>Creating risk for yourself has several benefits, of which motivation is only one. In his book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/skin-in-the-game\/1-page-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Skin in the Game<\/em><\/a>, risk analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/nassim-nicholas-taleb\/\">Nassim Nicholas Taleb<\/a> explains why some level of risk is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/app\/book\/skin-in-the-game\/1-page-summary#why-put-skin-in-the-game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">good for you and for your work<\/a>.<br><br>First, like Hardy, Taleb says that you\u2019ll work much more effectively if you have something to lose, such as money or reputation. You\u2019ll be more focused, make more careful decisions, and put in more effort when something you value is on the line.<br><br>Second, risk helps you to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shortform.com\/blog\/learn-from-your-mistakes\/\">learn from your mistakes<\/a>. It\u2019s a common maxim that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/living\/why-failure-is-your-teacher\/432751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">failure is the best teacher<\/a> (even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P4Us4eBcvAs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yoda said so<\/a>), but Taleb adds that this is only true when that failure costs you something. The motivation to learn from your mistakes comes from the pain of loss and the fear of losing more. Or, to look at this another way: If you don\u2019t face any consequences for failure, all you\u2019ll learn is that it doesn\u2019t matter whether you succeed or fail.<br><br>Finally, having skin in the game ensures that you\u2019ll act more ethically, because you know that you\u2019ll face consequences if you don\u2019t. For example, if you run a business, you might be tempted to ignore some safety regulations so that your employees can work faster and more efficiently. However, if you\u2019ve invested your own money into that business, the risk of getting fined for safety violations will most likely keep you honest\u2014this is because it\u2019s your money on the line, not just a faceless corporation\u2019s profits.\u00a0<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is eustress, and how can it help you achieve your goals?
